Exposure

Exposure is the currency of folks who have a lot to gain from your involvement but nothing to offer you in return (or simply refuse to offer you anything tangible).

Example A: IGI Global gets a bunch of industry experts to write chapters for their textbooks, then IGI global sells those textbooks at around $300 each. The authors get "exposure" and the publisher keeps all the proceeds and work. These are called "Vampire Presses" and pretty much constitute all academic publishers. That textbook you had to buy for a college class? It was written by unpaid academics/teachers and the publisher owns the rights and all the revenues for it.

This is why I give out any textbook that I help write, for free in PDF form.

Example B: Peer Reviewed Publications. Association for Computing Machinery is great, but then they also charge an arm and a leg for access to that research. The academics writing it get "exposure" while the publisher gets the money.

This is why I freely give out my research papers to anyone who asks.

Example C: So called "Associations" for Virtual Worlds and AR who charge upwards of $9,500 a year for membership. They try to convince members to write playbooks and research, etc... which are only available to members, and act as though speaking at their events and sponsoring them is an opportunity.

It's not. Speaking for "exposure" is just as bogus as writing an industry playbook for virtual worlds and AR when they stand to make a small fortune from it and in exchange offer you "exposure" in return.

Whenever somebody these days asks me to write playbooks, do speaking engagements, collaborate on market reports, etc all for "exposure", I have the same response as the hot dog vendor in this comic by The Oatmeal:

"haha, Fuck no."

Why we set deadlines, why we miss them, and how to break the cycle of falling short.

EasyGCM updated to support GCM 3.0

I collaborated with +inloop to add support for GCM 3.0 into their library:
https://github.com/inloop/easygcm

It's most convenient way how to integrate GCM 3.0 to your app as far as I know. We use it for our Avast mobile apps.
