That in a gruesome incident Forty-four passengers were charred to death in a Bus accident in Mahabubnagar district, 130 km from Hyderabad, when a private Volvo passenger bus from Bangalore went in flames in the early hours on Wednesday, is shocking to say the least. In order to preclude such gruesome accidents, all passenger buses should have emergency exits as in the case of trains. The makers of Volvo must also examine the connected safety issues urgently and do its best to rectify the design defects, if any, following the investigations. In the meantime, the authorities must legislate maintaining real-time list of passengers in any such passenger buses in the long routes mandatory. Insurance should also be made mandatory in state as well as private buses to overcome the financial constraints of the dependents following the untimely death of the bread-winners in such mishaps.
