Brand new and hot on my Sense of Adventure blog: inside the art inside THE DINOSAUR LORDS!

Plus win a free copy! (But hurry.)
Surprise! A book called The Dinosaur Lords has dinosaurs in it. Who knew? Well, not so fast, Captain Obvious Straw Man ! There aren’t just dinosaurs made of words. There’s pictures. Pretty pictures. Awesome pictures. I could also have entitled the post, “Horror Is The Thing With Feathers.” Yes, to the wonderment and envy of my peers, The Dinosaur Lords has interior illustrations. And they're by the ...

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: one month till the New Age of Dinosaurs begins!

Yes, kiddies - THE DINOSAUR LORDS drops July 28th, 2015!
The Dinosaur Lords gets released one month from today: July 28th, 2015! That’s not scary at all. Don’t worry, sweetie. He’s more afraid of you than you are of him. It’s exciting, sure. But … whoa! Lot of trepidation involved, I must admit. Tor continues to do well by me. On Twitter they just trotted out The Quote again – you know the one I mean. And speaking of The Quote, I believe I forgot to link it a couple mo...

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: dinosaurs to see before I join them!
Not for dinosaurs. Except for birds, that ship sailed 66 million years ago. So Steve “S. M.” Stirling (that name will come up later, spoilers) and I have a mild and jocular debate going on: he claims we (in our early sixties) are doomed to be the last generation to die before human lifespans get vastly extended. I maintain that, with a little luck, if we can just hold on a few more years, we’ll slide in under the wire. In any event, ...

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: change comes to THE CHANGE! Or at least the venue for the mass-signing Monday next.
For The Change ! Remember how the launch party for the (now released!) anthology The Change: Tales of Downfall and Rebirth was supposed to be held at George RR Martin's Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe, NM, on Monday, June 15 at 7 PM? Well, it’s still happening the same date and time. Just not the same place. Instead it’s here: In the heart of The Railyard in downtown Santa Fe, it says right here...

Brand new on my Sense of Adventure blog! Time is fleeting....
Holy carp! That’s all that remains until the modest little tome I like to call The Dinosaur Lords comes out from Tor ! Not that I’m counting down the days, hours, and minutes until the culmination of twelve or thirteen years (I can’t even remember now) of work finally happens.  No, as you can see from my home page, I leave that up to the suave counter installed by my Web-Master Supreme, Ron Miles . Please enjoy this ep...

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: Tor.com and Irene Gallo give us a look at THE DINOSAUR LORDS....
So, just as they said they would, Tor dropped a teaser look at some of the interior illustrations for The Dinosaur Lords today. Yep. You heard that right. And how are they? Creators’ truth, until I saw the big version on Tor.com , I didn’t realize this was the Bocaterrible ( Pliosaurus funkei , aka Predator X) eatin’ pirates from an actual sequence  in the book. Well, given that they’re done by Richard A...

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: In which we venture overseas with Dinosaurs! And also Lords.
Before the Roger Zelazny Memorial at the Jean Cocteau Cinema last month, my agent Kay McCauley came up to me outside the theater, gave me a hug, and said,

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: no matter how you try to stop it....
Or at least, it’s happening again. Not the Change , which happened March 17, 1998 at 6:15 PM PST (tl;dr: shit broke.) The Change: Tales of Downfall and Rebirth , the senses-shattering anthology edited by Steve “S. M.” Stirling ! Which is set after – well, you know. Yes, we’re doing it again – as in signing it. At least some or all of the NM authors who contributed, which is about most of us.  And this time we’re doing it here...

New and hot on my Sense of Adventure blog: courtesy of the fine folks at Tor.com!
Of course, they probably taste like chicken. Not because we’re in the Matrix (again, probably ), but because chickens, like all birds, are dinosaurs . So people have been asking for excerpts from my senses-shattering, soon-to-be-released epic fantasy novel The Dinosaur Lords . I used to have some here on the blog, but in the Great Upgrade carried out by my Webmaster Supreme Ron Miles they got unavoidably misplaced. B...

New up on my Sense of Adventure blog: why is this man performing a Tyrannosaur roar?
So a week ago Sunday I went to the wonderful memorial for Roger Zelazny hosted by George R. R. Martin at his Jean Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe. It was touching – and good to be reminded that my late friend and Wild Cards colleague wasn’t just one of the g reatest writers ever , but a really great guy. The audience was in large part a rogues’ gallery of New Mexico SF/F writers, unsurprisingly. And afterwards at the reception I h...

Hot news, new up on my Sense of Adventure blog!
And not just any change. The Change. Turn and face the strange …. You’re familiar with S. M. Stirling ’s Emberverse novels, right?  They’re perennial best-sellers – and if not quite on a George or Diana scale, they’re still right up there. They tell the story of an alternate Earth in which, one day, modern technology … stopped. And they’re pretty wildly entertaining and fun. They started out as mostly alt-history...

Hot off my Sense of Adventure blog: time to make your plans for Spring, 2016!
So a bunch has happened since last I checked in here. I will try to fill in some of the highlights right here over the next few days. One of the biggest came – was it almost a month ago? – when for the first time I got to attend the Jack Williamson Lectureship at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. It was swell. Uncle Vic wants you! …To come see him as Guest of Honor here next year! This year’s guest of honor ...

The Dinosaur Lords - coming January 2013 from Tor!
Introduction
I was born in Tulsa, lived the first year & a half of my life in Puerto Rico, and moved with my mother to Santa Fe, NM when I was seven. Shortly after we moved to Albuquerque, where with minor interruptions I've stayed happily since.

While I've been a cowboy, a rock radio DJ, & a bouncer, I've spent almost my whole adult life as a professional writer. Mostly I do novels, by preference SF and Fantasy; I've written short stories as well. I'm an original co-creator of the Wild Cards shared-world anthology series. I've written under numerous pseudonyms as well as my own name. I have a story in the latest WC book, Fort Freak, as well as writing novels in the Deathlands series.

The big news is that I've sold an epic fantasy trilogy to Tor; the first novel, The Dinosaur Lords, is due out early 2013. Please check out these free sample preview chapters on my Sense of Adventure blog.

I have cats named TJ and Squeak and a dog named Emma. I live on Jupiter. True things.

Having to all practical purposes died and been reborn last year - in large part thanks to the truly astonishing efforts of my friends - I'm busting loose and aiming to misbehave. So, watch yourselves.
