Photography first: for everyone, and for professionals

Earlier this week I proudly welcomed +Nik Software to Google. They've been making pictures more awesome for 17 years, and we're excited to bring Nik's expertise to the entire Google+ community!

I also want to make something clear: we're going to continue offering and improving Nik's high-end tools and plug-ins. Professionals across the globe use Nik to create the perfect moment in their photographs (e.g., http://goo.gl/aDtkO), and we care deeply about their artistry.

Together with Nik, we'll continue to put "photography first."

Excited to see this product in action, and to see how it interfaces with Google+

The Great Wall of China?

Can't quite tell, is that a sunset or a sunrise?

Yes +Vic Gundotra can you share your thoughts on how Nik's products may be incorporated into Google's G+ and picasa services?

Ok joking aside +Vic Gundotra you do take great pictures. Ever thought about teaching photography you know outside the whole Google thing.

That is great news indeed. There were a few "concerned" voices, screaming wolf all too early, regarding this matter.

Thanks for clarifying +Vic Gundotra

What licence is that picture released under, +Vic Gundotra ?

It's beautiful, and I hope I don't get sued for using it as a wallpaper or a G+ header image =)

Very happy to hear the commitment to continue to support the Nik's plug-ins and tools.  Thanks!

+Martin van der Kroon We are committed to continue the high end tradition of Nik software. Don't worry. We love their tools as much as everyone else.

I hope it improves the photo services from Google+.

I own the complete collection and it is a work of mastery.  Moreover, the webcasts they put together connect the community of users with top-tier photographers; it's wonderful seeing the different workflows used in the wild.

Like it. But pictures buld in latest chromium OS  are even better :-)

Thank you +Vic Gundotra for your reaffirmation! As long as Google innovates (whether in-house or bought), is here for its users and has a reasonably ethical approach, I'm with you!

+Vic Gundotra that's a nice addition for photo lovers like me. I also hope we will get a zoom control for tall vertical pictures and panorama pictures :)

It'll be great to have some of this software integrated with Android

+Vic Gundotra - on my next vacation I'm planning on bringing only my Nexus 7 alongside my DSLR. I want to shoot Nikon RAW images, import them via usb, maybe edit them on the device itself, transfer them to google drive .. I haven't figured it out exactly how I'm gonna do this (the SD reader via usb approach seems sketchy, I have not chosen a RAW converter etc) so a more integrated solution for photographers would be appreciated :)

bueatful...................

Well that eases my concern... i love the Nik plugins

Hopefully a photo editor built into the Google+ app since Picnik never made it. (Guessing it was the HTML5 nature of Picnik that made it hard to port over to mobile)

+Vic Gundotra I'm curious. Were you or others at Google surprised by our fears for Nik Software products after the announcement of the acquisition?

nice place...................

That's great news - appreciate it very much! :-)

I was also a bit concerned since I use some of the plug-ins of this fantastic software but now I'm all happy - even more since it will make this service slightly better as it already is ;-)

Great image. Creates a moment we can all live in!

beautiful shot!

excellent timing.. breath taking...

YOU have captured the head of  GOD  in your camera ...SUPERB,,,,

Guess what?! You just punched critics nose by committing to Nik Software’s development.

I'm a big fan of their software and use it on almost all my photos -- love me some "tonal contrast" ! Glad they're in the Google family :)

Timeless photo, very spiritual to me.

I wish the whole world was like this.

magically cool. if there's a place like that i want to visit

something very artificial about the photograph, the green color looks dead and weirdly ugly. Very amateur sorry.

I just wish I could use Nik's software on Linux.

that looks ROMANTIC!!!!
;)

Very Nice.................Wow

Wow. If there is a picture that said, "This is what Heaven looks like", could this be it?

So... Who has the thousand words to accompany this awesome shot? :)

very nice shoot,,I like this,What kind camera have you use

Of course the colors are due to the air pollution, but hey, nice picture. :-)

love the picture!that is my kind of paradice

It's nice and all, but I don't want to live in China. I'm rather fond of the US

The Nik plug ins are very handy if used in moderation.😃

Glad to hear the high end tools are appreciated, though it's easy to see that over time their small revenue relative to broader consumers, will end up finding them lacking in attention. <cough>apple<cough>

Hmmm +Vic Gundotra . This post and recent events have made me appreciate how much thought and care is going into the products and services I use, and what can happen if that care is missing. Keep up the great work!

Why sit at home and not get paid ???😥

Get paid for Lil to no work at all at home 😁

I am going to go there next summer its the great wall of china!

I love the juxtaposition of the greys and greens

I like this picture. I've allways like learning about, and seeing other contries. Even though I'll never go.

SAY HI TO THE CHING CHANG CHONG FOR ME B!@#H

omg! I wanna be a photographer! This is beautiful!! gorgeous!

with all the new cameras out today, taking photos have been made so simple that even I have taken a couple of nice pics..To be a professional and to go to all these awesome places would be so wonderful indeed. I knew this man who worked for a magazine and the cameras he used looked so complicated to operate!

NIK melded into Picassa...
Pure awesomeness!!!

Vic, I hope Google considers expanding the situation here in that many people throw money at Adobe for Lightroom or Photoshop just to get to the Nik plugins. The CS/Photoshop situation is getting rather silly which is why many people are just using Lightroom at this point. If there were a simple camera RAW convertor to Nik plugin tool, that would be interesting. Perhaps an enhanced desktop version of Snapseed. Just a thought. Apple could have done more with Aperture but I guess they have backed off now. Google has most of the parts to make this happen and it might be worth the added revenue.

Great sreensaver. Very nice pic

i love how sharp the colors are in this picture.

I'm really pleased to hear you confirm Google's commitment to keeping the Nik plugins going. I admit to remaining slightly suspicious of how you'll do that AND have the Nik guys do work for Google but time will tell. However, I do think there's a massive opportunity here for Google to create some truly amazing and affordable photography tools to challenge Adobe. I think Google+ has proven that photographers are a core vertical for Google. Here's hoping you guys really deliver on the possibilities.

Can't stop looking at this one...makes we want to plan a trip

Standing ovation from the peanut gallery

Cool, I love the way the photograph captured the rolling hills against the backdrop of natural sunlight coming out from the clouds.

Love the lighting in the background.

thats really cool i <3 it

NICE PHOTOS....................................................

So what's next? Adobe? If you could offer Chrome based professional photo editing (Lightroom, Photoshop, Nik) in the cloud, I could finally get rid of my Windows based workstation (I don't like Windows 8) and migrate to Ubuntu...

Please don't kill Snapseed on iOS. It's the most user-friendly editing software with that's able to do most of the stuff that I need. Alteratively, make it available on Android!

Hope nothing will change. Have been using NIK plugins with Lightroom for years and would hate to see this end with no further development. I have fears for Snapseed though.

Thank you +Vic Gundotra for clarification on this important subject.
Should we expect Snapseed application integrated into Android? Or it would be a standalone application, downloadable via Google Play?

Vic, Hope this is true about the continuation of Nik products.  What about Nikon Capture NX-2 ?  Are you and Nikon going to come up with a upgrade?  How does Nikon fit into the picture?  Us Nikon Capture NX2 users are all waiting for answers.  Hope you make a comment on these questions.

+Edmund DePinter Nikon Capture NX 2 is a Nikon product (hence the Nikon in the name). It wasn't a Nik product, even though Nik worked with Nikon to develop the software. Best thing is to check with Nikon directly :)

Thanks for clarifying the future of Nik professional tools, +Vic Gundotra - I use Nik plugins daily in my Photoshop workflow, and it makes life so much easier (while producing such wonderful results).

Great to see commitment to the pro products, besides...snapseed couldn't have been made if it not for all the hard work and research that went into the pro plugins.

+Vic Gundotra - is there any chance that you can make +Nik Software a little more egalitarian when it comes to distribution of said software? When HDR Efex Pro 2 was released a few months back, it took a good month or two after the US/Canada release for us to have the option of purchasing it in Australia and New Zealand, even for electronic downloads due to bricks and mortar distribution agreements. It seems wrong that we can't purchase said software on the same day of release in this day and age. That, and lots of us also missed out on a US-only special offer to upgrade.

My hope with the Google purchase, is that you'll be able to flatten these arbitrary barriers so that all Nik Software fans online are treated as equals ;)

We hope to see more developments for the desktop products that made Nik so successful in the first place.  The mobile market is huge and we hope that the professional photographers don't get dumped in the "race to the top" in the mobile markets.

Fantastic news, and I look forward to seeing Nik grow! As much as lightroom is my daily driver so to speak, silver fx pro is amazing, and the latest version of viveza is super powerful! Can't wait to see what you guys can do with Nik.

Such a sad day. This is not fantastic news, it's simply just another acquisition for Google wanting to take a pro tool and dumb it down for the masses. Nik should have just sold them the rights to Snapseed and be done with it.

So where's the Windows 8 update for my Nik Plugins ? I've been forced onto 8 by buying a new PC & I can't use them anymore !

I am glad to hear this, Vic. I have been using Nik tools for years, and cannot imagine a world without them. There just isn't anything like it. Plus I just invested in upgrading to the latest versions and want to see a few years of good use and support from this investment.

Dear David, I thought that upgrades are free for existing users. Would appreciate some input as I am a Nik user. Also would anyone know how to access the free downloads? Thanks in advance  Cheers

You can update though your Nik account or when you open the software a notification should appear if any updates are available.

Actually, contact customer support and they will give you the download link to the suite.

Great picture of great wall of China. Thanks
