Yet. Another. Google+. Update.
I love this team :-)

Expanding the availability of custom URLs

Custom URLs are short, easy to remember web addresses that link directly to your Google+ profile or page (like or They make it easier for you to connect with others, as well as promote your content, and today we're significantly expanding their availability to people and pages on Google+.

If your profile meets the following criteria, you’ll now be able to claim a custom URL:
- Has a profile photo, and
- Has at least 10 followers, and
- Has an account that's at least 30 days old

Meanwhile, any brand or business that has a linked website or is a verified local business can claim a custom URL for their Google+ page. Link and verification info is available in the Google+ Help Center:

Once you meet the eligibility criteria, just visit your profile or page to begin the claiming process. If you don't see the option yet, don't worry: we're expanding availability throughout the week, and you'll see the in-product notice as soon as your custom URL is ready.

We hope that custom URLs will help  you more easily promote your content on Google+, whether it be new photo collections, Hangouts On Air, or an interesting series of posts.  For ideas on how to include custom URLs in your campaigns, ad creatives and more, visit our help center:

I just got that on one of my pages!
What are the odds my profile will get one?
YESS!!! Please!!! Awesomeness!!! Thank you!!!
+Vic Gundotra I believe I meet the criteria but I don't see the options available?  Any ideas?  Does my profile pic have to be a pic of me and not my current avatar?
Sweet! I'll have to think of something to clever to use as my custom URL.
This is officially bigger news than any of the photo crud that apparently warranted a livestream.
The proposed URLs for some pages also include a top level domain, which is not possible to edit.
For those saying that they don't see the option, be patient. It's not an immediate thing.

Anyway, I look forward to the update, and I'm sure many other non-verified and some verified users/pages feel the same way!
How do I get mine +Vic Gundotra?
+Vic Gundotra if the suggested url I received is not quite right, how can it be changed to be more appropriate? (I don't mean capitalization or accents/diacritics.)
any business using a url which is not a .com (e.g. .org,, etc) gets an ugly vanity name, with the full website address used rather than the business name. Spoils things somewhat
Good question +Ralf Haring, I don't even see the option for editing capitalization.  No edit box appears, but this is a long-awaited improvement!  Cheers.
How is it custom if you can't even change the letters in the URL? This is one of the few things that Facebook does better than G+.
+Vic Gundotra , you and the team have done superlative work... if the initial shots that I'm seeing in public posts are any indication, the photo enhancements alone further differentiate G+ as "the platform that works!"
+Vic Gundotra How do you approve to have different sharing intent system within a single app?

Different for photos which is beautiful and very bad for posts re-share ?
Hey vic. I just wanted to personally thank you for a great livestream presentation. :-)

For me, the greatest part of Google updates/events is not the updates themself (which are awesome) The best part of following these events on YouTube is to see you on stage.

I think you're really inspiring to watch and you're the greatest performer of the whole tech industry currently.
Greetings from Finland!
+Vic Gundotra
I like how Google is creating incentives for G+ users to have a profile picture.  I think it's the right way of going about it.
Just got mine! Thx +Vic Gundotra  and the entire +Google+ team. Today's announcements and update really solidify why it makes sense to be on +Google+  instead of the other guys ;)
Hey Vic, +Otavio Silva,

Is there a contact email/profile I can use to request a different custom URL? The one offered is {business}CoUk, but could do with just having {business}. It's what we use elsewhere and we've got the trademark too.

DJ Lein
Very well done! Looking forward to getting notifications for both my personal profile and brand page for +Timberlake Cabinetry.
+Vic Gundotra I read we create own custom vanity urls but rather, we can only choose from selected list and we may even need to append numbers to make it unique. Possible to confirm?

Since I use my initials for my last name, I hope it lets me use my full last name for my custom URLs.  My last name is not common so I'd be the only person with that URL anyways.  Still waiting for it to roll out to me though so hopefully I'd be able to do this.
I don't see the option.  I have been waiting for this for a while with 42,000 people circling me--it's annoying I still can't get a vanity URL
+Vic Gundotra. You guys freaking rock!
Yay! I just got mine! Thanks for this awesome (and really needed) update! Great job!
Now what happens if you legally change your name or a female getting married and have a new last name. Can't change your Vanity URL?

On Facebook you can change your URL one time.
Why the rollout is so slow?even for nexus 4 devices...
Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Carmelyne Thompson I would be excited too, but 42,000 people circling me and I am not so lucky.  Wish I could say thank you since this is something I have been waiting for forever,
this is seriosly cool, i never get url with my full name on it bcz whenever i try its already taken by some 1 else... thanks for this update #googleplusupdate +Vic Gundotra
oh dear.. i waited so long :-D i hope i will get my URL this week too.. :-/
That's GREAT. I wonder what should I do in order to get my online name available. I wish for +niron
+Otavio Silva why aren't I allowed to claim my custom url yet? I think I am more than qualified, waiting........
+Vic Gundotra Your docs are wrong.  They say that a non-local business page that is linked to a website is eligible for a custom URL.  Yet my +Typesafe page isn't able to get a custom URL.
why I must have 10 followers ?? this is so Stupid :(
let's say I wan't a custom URLs but I DON'T want any followers ... this is not fair people :(
+Eduardo Chavez  raises an important issue. NameNicknameLastname is way too long and it's utterly useless for many of us. In my case I got "ArielKantKanterewicz", which is redundant and too long... I'd rather use my gmail username, which is short, easier to type, easier to remember for a human being (and every single other social network lets me use)
+Vic Gundotra: Very unfortunate, that you can't let us claim the handle we use in other social networks. I understand its to allow real businesses to use their own handles, before some lunatic takes it. But if you could allow us to use our handles from the Twitter account linked with our G+ profile, it would be terrific. Honestly, i dont want what you offer.
+Vic Gundotra  My business has the same name on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Wordpress, Blogger, Tumblr, Instagram, Vine, Reddit, Foursquare, Flickr and that other little Google property called YouTube. We would really like to keep our same Social Handle which is the first two words of our name. Honestly we don't send people to Google+ because without the direct link, the address just looked ugly in marketing. Now, unless we can get it changed, we still won't because it creates inconsistency in our brand and may confuse our clients. I think it is fantastic, but I'm not certain why you guys are restricting this engine so much, it seems that more people would recommend it and businesses would use Google+ more in marketing if you made it just a little bit easier ... or at least provided some type of direction for how to change the URL.
Great idea +Vic Gundotra and the +Google+ Team. I was offered my new ID today...perfect, thank you. As a bonus I ordered a black/32Gb/#Nexus5, too, so a very productive day and an extremely pleasant Google experience.

Grazie and Namaste :-)
+Vic Gundotra Nice feature! Facebook allows you to change the URL, I don't see why you guys are imposing URLs instead of letting users to change it as required... Seriously, that algorithm doesn't work, my "suggested" url is wrong...
So I managed to get an appropriate url for myself, but for some reason +Google+ decided that for my business page it would include the TLD in the approved custom url. There's no option to request it without the TLD, even though the name is extremely regional and won't conflict with anything outside of this country.
+Jonathan Devere-Ellery same here, I think companies should omit the TLD from the pages, it sounds so funny especially if your business name has "net" and your TLD is "net" it will be /+examplenetNet which is double nets in my case +Vic Gundotra  please ask the team you love to make it better so we can love them with you :-)
I got my "preapproval" for my name, but my name will be changing in 7 months! If I accept this URL will I ever be able to change it?
I got mine this week!  I wished that Al Elliott wasn't such a common name on here though. ;-)  ...I guess that's my parents fault. ;-) isn't so bad though! Thanks Google!
IS it possible to request a different custom URL? As a business page we need it to keep the same across the board so the suggested URL is not desired. I would think it would have suggested the same as the current page name that is established.
You can always buy the domain of the name you want (if you don't already own it) and set a domain forward to your actual, then temporarily change your business URL on Google+. You can even roll the dice if you don't own what you want and set a temporary URL. Its worked worked for a few clients ;)
I WILL NOT claim the custom url for my organization until I can get a custom url without the "org" needlessly appended to the end!
