Join the "Imagine No Malaria" Effort

Join the Imagine No Malaria effort to save 10,000 lives in 2014!
Did you know that?

---Malaria claims an estimated 655,000 lives in Africa each year - mostly children under five and pregnant women.
---Malaria is a parasite transmitted through the bite of a mosquito, but it is 100% preventable, treatable, and beatable.
---Imagine No Malaria is a denomination-wide ministry to empower communities in Africa with resources, improve infrastructure, and achieve a sustainable victory over Malaria.
---In just a few short years, Malaria's impact has been cut in half from one death every 30 seconds to one every 60 seconds.  This is great progress, but we are called to do more.
---Together, we will overcome Malaria with a comprehensive approach that includes prevention, education, communication and treatment!

Be looking for upcoming opportunities to learn more about the eradication efforts and to learn how YOU and your family are needed to share in this UMC-led effort.  For more information, contact Denise Williams (

Happy Thanksgiving from Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church
Today is Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is an occasion where we pause to give thanks for the blessings we have received and to renew our hearts. Too often our lives get caught up in our desire for more, or our wish for "different". Thanksgiving is where we realize how we are truly blessed. Thanksgiving is where we stop, and give thanks to God from whom all blessings flow.
In 1 Chronicles 16:8, 11-12 we read: "Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done...Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced..." The Scripture tells us that when we are truly thankful to God, then we must "make know among the nations what he has done." I encourage each of you to take time on Thanksgiving Day to share the things for which you are thankful. I am sure you can count your blessings if you lift your eyes to our loving God whose faithfulness is infinitely greater than we can imagine.
My family is extremely grateful for the joy of being part of this wonderful congregation, and I constantly give God thanks for the honor of being your pastor. I am thankful for the opportunity to be in ministry with the clergy and laity that make up the staff of our church, and each of you - the faithful and generous congregation who strive to fulfill God's vision.
My prayer is that, this Thanksgiving, we will each offer to God our gratitude and praise.
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Bill Brunson

Our Pipe Organ - A Faithful Member of VHUMC

If you have ever attended a worship service in our Sanctuary at Vestavia Hills UMC you have no doubt noticed the music that is created with our pipe organ.  The organ is played for all traditional worship services as well as weddings, memorial services, concerts, and other special events.

Our organ was built and installed in 1963 by the Austin Organ Company.  This highly specialized instrument has many moving parts that help it function on a weekly basis.  Over time and without regular maintenance these parts deteriorate and can stop functioning.  Currently we have many of these parts that have deteriorated to the point of no return: most of the leather seals, and many of the metal pipes, electronics, and console parts.

We have contracted with Austin Organ Company once again to come and make the needed repairs to our beloved instrument.  This is where we need your help!

Over the next several months we want to give every member of the congregation the opportunity to either give directly or pledge financial support for this project.  Our campaign is running through the end of September with final pledges being received through December.  We need your help to get this work done.  The additional amount we need for this project is $400,000.

If we start next January, the repairs will be completed for the 50th Anniversary Celebration of our Sanctuary in September of 2014.  Look for more information in the days ahead including a video that will be shown in every Sunday School class.

You can help us in three ways:
1. Pray for this ongoing project and how you will be a part.
2. Make a donation or pledge before the September 29 deadline.
3. Spread the word by talking to your family and friends about the pipe organ repairs.

If you would like to make your donation now there are two ways to contribute:
1. Write a check and designate “Pipe Organ” on the check
2. Go online to the website and click on the “Pipe Organ Campaign” button to make your donation or pledge.

We are excited about the future opportunities we have in our worship setting by repairing and enhancing our pipe organ.  We pray that you will join us in giving our organ a new voice and continuing the long tradition of wonderful music to the glory of God here at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.
