Introduction
There is nothing more remarkable to me than the power of nature. It is both cataclysmic and subtle. Slow and continuous erosion by water and wind can create landscapes every bit as astonishing as those shaped by catastrophic earthquakes or volcanic eruption. Nature is incredibly diverse – quiet streams and roaring waterfalls, burning desert sands and mossy riverbanks, silent snowfall and raging summer storms. This fantastic variety ensures that I can never photograph the same scene twice in the same way.

It's snowing outside, but these are blooming in my living room. smile emoticon I couldn't resist getting out my macro lens to capture those tiny little tendrils against the brilliant pink and orange flower. I used my favorite 180mm macro lens and got in as close as I could. When you get in this close, you are dealing with an incredibly narrow depth of field - but that's one of my favorite things about macro photography. I fall in love with all those soft edges every time.

The key to getting this shot just how I wanted it was the natural light coming though the window behind the orchids. It provides an oh-so-subtle rim light along the edge of that little curl, which makes it stand out against the similarly colored background.

I hope Spring gets here soon so I can get outside to shoot some outdoor blooms!

Bloopers and Outtakes!

Things are never dull when you do what we do for a living... and we make our share of mistakes! ;) We had way too much on the Big Island of Hawaii making our Essential Filters course (http://visualwilderness.com/product/efc) - and we thought we'd share a little bit of it with you. Be sure to turn on the sound!

+Brent Mail +Johny Spencer +Jay Patel - Can't wait to get out there and laugh with you guys again soon!

Ok - this is kind of a big deal. +f-stop is doing something that I've been dreaming about for a long time - building a bag designed specifically to fit women!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fstop/the-kashmir-female-focused-camera-pack-built-for-a

I got a chance to try out this gorgeous bag from Fstop a couple of months ago (you have NO idea how hard it's been to keep my mouth shut about this!)

I took it for a 3 mile hike and it feels GREAT! Keep in mind that it's not meant to handle 25 or 30 pounds of gear - this won't replace my Loka - but it's perfect if you are looking for a beautiful bag that is extremely lightweight, and made to fit a woman's frame! It's sturdy, it's adjustable, it's comfortable, it's keeps my gear protected - and it is really pretty, too! :)

I'm hoping that all my female photography buddies will let Fstop know that we are thrilled that they are making great bags just for us! And I'm hoping that all my male photography buddies will let Fstop know that they are thrilled to see great bags being made for their wives and daughters! :)

What do you think?

Almost 3 days since Monday and we’ve already passed a third of our goal. Thanks for the support. Please share and spread the word.

Congratulations to +Les Imgrund - the newest Master with +The Arcanum!

Eastern Osprey, Raven and The Arcanum

Some of you may know of +Trey Ratcliff +Peter Giordano +Curtis Simmons - they are the 3 people that put their heads together to develop a new way of learning, particularly in the creative arts.  This special place is called +The Arcanum.  It is full of people known as Apprentices and Masters all learning together to improve their art.  It is an amazing place.  How do I know?  I thought you would never ask!

I have been an Apprentice with The Arcanum since April.  I had the privilege to begin a journey with a group of like minded people, who are called Apprentices (if this is peaking your interest, head on over to the website thearcanum.com and have a look) who work as a Cohort with a Master.  We were very fortunate to be chosen  by +Varina Patel.  The journey we embarked on, and are still on, was to change many of us in ways that we are still realising.  It really is a place where you can be yourself, show people your art, be heard in the process and helped to improve your art.  There is so much great work going on in The Arcanum.  The people behind the scenes really are building an awesome place.

My journey took another turn today.  I was "onboarded" as a Master to work with my own Cohort.  I am currently working through the selection process of the Applications to join the Cohort - there are some amazing people in there.  Plus, there are some amazing Masters that are working on entering The Arcanum to join the group of very talented people already in the Mastery Cohort.  To say I am excited, would be a little understated.  But, the point behind all of this, is that, should you think that your art is something that means a whole lot to you, you breathe it everyday and can't wait to pick up your camera or paints or pencils, take a look at The Arcanum.  It really is a terrific place to be.  You will meet people that have your interests at heart and want to see you grow as an Artist, but perhaps, more importantly, as a person.  Trey's introduction video, says it all.  It is worth a few minutes of your time.

Thanks, Trey, Pete, Curtis and Varina.  8-))  The journey has been, and still is, awesome.

The image?  You have seen one from the same day.  This is Mumma after she left the nest once she finished feeding the 3 young Ospreys.  She was being harassed by the Ravens incessantly.  The image shows here fending off one Raven, whilst keeping her eyes on the second Raven coming in on her left.  It really seemed like a bit of a game, but it became serious once she left her perch.  They chased each other for a long time.  She chased them into trees and snapped branches as she flew through it.  They chased her through the trees as well.  It was a constant game of tag.  Mamma called timeout (that was the way it seemed) and settled onto the nest so that Papa could go fishing again!  He did bring a fish back in a few minutes.  They are good parents.  We'll see how big the "kids" are this weekend!  The Ravens?  they settled down on a couple of trees and watched!
