Had a great time talking with +Ugo Cei on TTIM recently!
TTIM 42 – A Conversation with Varina Patel

My guest for this week’s episode is landscape and nature photographer +Varina Patel.

With Varina, we discussed a number of topics, including:

* Minimalism
* Conveying a feeling, a mood through photographs
* Combining family life and travel
* Is getting it right in camera still important?
* Working the scene on location
* What does it take to be a great educator?

I am sure you will enjoy Varina’s take on all these issues.

My favorite piece of glass needs a new home...

It breaks my heart to do it, but I'm finally selling my beautiful Canon 180mm macro. It's been my favorite lens since it came out of the box, and I've taken some of my favorite shots with it. But - since my bag keeps getting heavier, I need to lighten my load. To that end, I've switched to Sony's lightweight mirrorless cameras - and that means my lenses have to go too. I held on to this one a little longer than the others - it really is that hard to let it go. So, if you are looking for a good deal on a fantastic piece of glass, here you go! I hope the lens will go to someone who will love it as much as I do.

Here's a shot I took with my wonderful 180mm macro - goodbye, old friend!

The simplicity of this shot was incredibly difficult to achieve. ;) I wanted to find the perfect angle to get those tiny droplets in perfect focus - and also get the edge of the rose petal almost sharp. Of course, the plane of focus is ridiculously narrow here - which is what I wanted... but that made it really hard to get the alignment just right. Luckily, I was working in a studio setting - so there was no wind to worry about. ;)

In the end, I took three shots in case I decided to blend them in post - and I used all three. I used the first to get the focus just right on the droplets, and the other two for a touch of extra depth of field on the edge of the petal.

I used the curving petal to draw the eye toward those droplets - notice that there's a second very subtle curve of sharp focus that pulls you in from the top and around to the right towards those droplets once again.

And of course, you probably know that I love creating images with a single color. It's a really effective way to simplify the image, while also calling attention textures, forms, shadows and highlights. The color is natural - this one such a beautiful, red rose. :)

Had a great time talking about Finding Your Groove with the amazing +Brent Mail on his fantastic Photo Profit podcast. We talked about the experimentation that goes along with building a solid photography business, the tools we use to create our video courses, and the lessons we've learned over the years.

It's really interesting to see how others spend their time in comparison to what I'm doing! Great article, Chris. If you are hoping to be a pro, it's good to have a better idea of what you'll need to do to make it happen.

We had way too much fun in California with +Glade Gauger and +Neal Yu! Thanks for coming with us, guys!

I used a circular polarizer to cut through the glare on the surface of the water to bring out those brilliant colors. What a view!
