Neck discomfort is one of the most common pains affecting older Americans. By age 65, x-ray studies show that 95 percent of men and 70 percent of women have at least some potentially painful degenerative changes in their necks.

Are neck pains normal as you age?

These changes are, in part, normal. As you age, the disks in your neck, which act like shock absorbers, lose much of their natural strength and elasticity. As a result, the entire structure of your neck can begin to crumble – overtaxing muscles, hindering joint movement, and pinching off nerves.

Seek immediate medical care if your neck pain is accompanied by the following:
- Numbness
- Tingling sensations
- Pain in your arms, hands, or chest

You should also see a doctor if in addition to a sore neck you develop any muscle weakness or dizziness.

THE ANALOGY OF YOUR NECK PAINS

An original amid the conventional buildings dotting downtown Seattle, Rainier Tower gets more than a few gawks from the first-time visitors. To some, the white 28-story office complex built atop a 12-story pedestal resembles a golf tee precariously balancing a quart of milk.

But in many ways, the pedestal looks precisely like a neck supporting a gigantic head – except this “neck” holds up a 20,000-ton “head.” Your neck doesn’t support quite that kind of load – a typical head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. But after a lifetime of twisting, turning, and bending, it certainly can feel as if the seven vertebrae and 32 muscles between your head and shoulders are holding up the equivalent of a massive skyscraper.

It’s a good analogy. There’s a lot of weight resting on top of your neck. Even when you’re standing or sitting still, the neck is doing a lot. It may look as if nothing is going on. But the body is constantly making small adjustments involving the neck to maintain that posture. So the neck muscles are constantly working. There really is almost no rest for them.
