We did so many "Screen Tests" at The Factory. Andy loved them. They were so hypnotically revealing.

+Jon Van Oast Hey Jon, for sure it can be done better or worse. There's a guy in the video who emphasizes Relevance, and I think that's right. As he says, learning French could be boring or compelling, depending on the context. But the overarching concept for me is that in a "code is law" century, if you're afraid even to look at a snip of html, as most of my students are, then it's hard to see how you can be more than a slave / victim / serf to a feudal lord, in this evolving culture. ATM, 3 days before the holiest day in my elderly, Christian mother's year, the one day when her 70 great-grand-nieces & nephews come to her house, her otherwise beautiful WordPress website says simply "this account has been suspended." Why? Because her lame webmaster (me, sadly) isn't tech enough to decipher the non-helpful information from our high-priced web host as to what the issue they suddenly found in her WP site, and therefore keep taking her site offline for, is. Even a simple family site, if you're not tech enough, apparently fails compared to the cattle farming of being a Facebook user.

SL's camera offset is too high. It's bad for walking, activities, building, avatars. It's less immersive than "on the ground". Here's how to fix it.

Introduction
As a virtual public artist my work invites avatar communities to express their identity, explore their culture, and demand their civil rights.

Artistic Director of Vanessa Blaylock Company.
Managing Editor of iRez Virtual Salon.
Bragging rights
It's funny that this box is labeled "bragging rights." I suppose we are all proud of something. I'm certainly proud of my daughter, but in a way too proud of her to "brag" about her here. I think that too much we have favored the culture of spectacle over the culture of community. Too much we have fantasized about "greatness" instead of building "family." I don't want to "brag" about anything. I'd like to live as simply, as small, and as honestly as I am able.
Education
  • Koninklijk Conservatorium
    New Media Studies, 1994 - 1998
My BFA was in Choreography and I began my graduate studies at Koninklijk in the dance department. It wasn't the best fit. I was befriended by Louis Andriessen from music, without whom I'd probably never have finished. After a Summer 1996 visit to Miller Puckette at UCSD I moved from Dance to New Media where I received my MFA in 1998.
  • Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts
    Choreography, 1988 - 1991
HKAPA is an amazing school and Hong Kong is an incredible world city. I had traveled quite a bit with my mother's work in the past, but this was more of an away from home and on my own experience. The dance and choreography here was rigorous. I'm glad I had the one year with Kaprow before this. I think that really opened my perspective enormously. In physical terms I worked the hardest of my life at HKAPA and was in the best condition in my life. I think there was actually a moment when I had flawless technique. Yet it was really the "side projects" and experiments and photo adventures and performance installations that seemed to mean the most to me, that were the most creative for me, and ultimately have become the through-line of my life and work.
  • University Of California San Diego
    Performance Art, 1987 - 1988
I have known so many artists who possess such unrelenting confidence. Yet my life and work have always been defined by doubt. Of all the doubts and regrets there is none greater than having left UCSD after only one year. I was lucky enough to study with Allan Kaprow during that year and his ideas have, gradually over time, woven ever deeper into the core of my being. Perhaps the simplicity and honesty of Kaprow is something that must be worked on for a lifetime, and perhaps that year of "introduction" to "art & life" was enough. Still, I'll always wonder what work I might today be doing if I'd finished my baccalaureate at UCSD with Kaprow.
  • St. Joseph's Convent
    General Education, 1983 - 1987
My mother was a diplomat in the Reagan Administration and I wound up spending the bulk of my high school years at St. Joseph's Convent in Castries, St. Lucia.
