Texas has experienced some unusually warm winter days. As the days get longer and the temperature gets warmer, motorcyclists can eagerly begin dusting off their treasured vehicles. The steady breeze, the fresh air, and the sense of freedom can be liberating, but the dangers associated with motorcycles are far too real. Motorcycle accidents are more likely to result in injuries and fatalities compared to traditional automobile accidents. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, motorcycle accidents in 2013 resulted in 26 times more fatalities compared to car accidents. On a motorcycle, there are no airbags or seat belts; it’s just the driver and the road. So what can you do to protect yourself and those around you?

Obey The Law

The law is there for a reason. Some adrenaline-seekers turn to motorcycles for their daily rush, which often leads to unsafe behavior. All motorists should follow the speed limit, drive sober, and stay in their lane, but this is especially true for motorcyclists. Small vehicles are difficult to see on the road, therefore, a speeding motorcycle driving erratically on the highway can easily be overlooked larger cars and trucks.

Wear the Proper Gear

Head injuries can lead to permanent damage, therefore wearing a helmet is essential for each and every motorcyclist. However, a helmet is just one of the many materials that riders need. For example, proper shoes with rugged soles are important for keeping your feet safe and in control of the motorcycle. It is also important to wear clothing made of strong and protective fabrics like leather. Leather has been a staple in motorcyclists’ wardrobe for decades, but it’s not simply there for its aesthetic benefits. The material does a good job with preventing scrapes and scratches that can result from unexpected falls.

Maintain the Vehicle

Keeping a motorcycle well-maintained is a great way to prevent future accidents from occurring. A malfunction in a motorcycle’s tire, brakes or steering can lead to severe injuries. Even a minor problem that causes the vehicle to unexpectedly stop on the road can be dangerous because of the motorcycle’s small size. A stalled motorcycle cannot be easily seen by other motorists, especially at night, therefore, collisions are more likely to take place.
