The Wind Catchers of Iran ... "The middle eastern countries are characterised by a hot and dry climate, and so buildings and homes are traditionally constructed from thick ceramics with high insulation values to beat the heat. Houses are packed close together with high walls and ceilings, maximizing shade at ground level. The heat of direct sunlight is also minimized with small windows that face away from the sun. Another element that Persian architects incorporate in their structures are windcatchers.

A windcatcher is a high tower built on the roof whose purpose is to cool the interior of the building by improving air circulation. Windcatchers are thought to have originated from Persia and from there the ingenious design spread throughout the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They have been in use for many millennia - examples of windcatchers have been found in traditional Egyptian architecture as ancient as the days of the pharaohs, 1300 years before Christ. ..."

I joined a group of antique and vintage sellers. We have a website (partial) going online this weekend:  Antiquing Brazoria County.  My stuff is on Mertie's This and That page. I am also mentioned as the tech consultant for the site.   Check it out.  Jeter's is sponsoring the website to bring shoppers to our area south of Houston. Next time you are traveling to Quintana Beach or Surfside or even Galveston, check us out. Some of the shops are just minutes from Galveston. And we are just a ways east of Matagorda Beach.  The full website will be online within 2 weeks. Even now it is looking pretty good.

See the finalist's in this year's competition. Each has a short video in which they introduce their project. These projects are awesome.

Kids should remember that a mentor may guide you, and you can do wonderful things, too, with just a touch of mentor guidance and sponsored financial assistance. Many communities are willing to help out. Grab the Science Fair Rules, and plan for next year. Now is the time to get started.

Worried you won't win? Experiencing the process is 90% of the value of doing a science fair project. Build upon it every year, after a few years, you could have a winner. Definitely, you will have something you will be proud of doing.

Sign up for next year--just keep looking up the site to find out when.  Keep studying the site to find out how. Download the rules; they stay pretty much the same year after year. Get information on your local fair. Go to it and make it so. Get r done!

Come join these Hangouts On Air with our 2014 Finalists, and hear about their amazing projects!

All of the Finalists will be interviewed by +Alex Dainis of +Bite Sci-zed.

For an antique shop to visit in coastal Texas, try Ramblin Rose. Lots of stuff at reasonable prices. Ramblin Rose is also listed in the Antiquing Brazoria County website.   http://www.coskrey-biz.com/ramblinrose

I wrote another poem last month. I call it "Homage to Bt Corn." It is in my blog Valerie's Soapbox.

Critiques would be appreciated. Biology teachers, can your classes explain the last line?
