"[Donato Poto] credits legendary restaurateur Piero Selvaggio (whose restaurant Valentino Santa Monica celebrates 44 years this December) as his mentor." http://lat.ms/29PNSLi
The conversation about restaurants in Los Angeles is most often about food, and rightfully so, but the experience of dining in restaurants is also about something else. The lighting, the music, the thrill of being remembered on a return visit – this is the domain of the front of house, a brigade made up of hosts, bussers, bartenders, servers and managers. It’s called hospitality, and just like the food itself — and the expectation of the diners —...

Wow! We are really grateful for all who come and enjoy our food and service. Valentino Santa Monica is our home and our doors are open for you. Thank you to Design1950 on TripAdvisor for their review: "If you are looking for one of the best restaurants in the world, look no further. Valentino is by far, way ahead of the rest. This isn't your typical Italian eatery. This is old world classic style gourmet, and there are no twists. Of course, you can order the pasta, and it will be great. If fact it's the best I've had outside of Italy. For a real treat, allow them to pair the wines with the food. Enjoy, is all I can say."

Here is a first hand account of the history of Italian fine dining in Los Angeles by our very own Piero Selvaggio.

Piero Selvaggio on “History of L.A. Italian Restaurants” (VIDEO)
"Evolution of Italian cuisine in Los Angeles from 1950 to now—including the classic restaurants from the early days of fine dining to the trattorias of today—influences, changes and current state of Italian food in the United States through Piero’s personal experience and insider perspective."

Los Angeles Magazine and its writers just placed us in the best 50 restaurants in the city. Well, we are humbled and grateful. And still a record of longevity. This is Valentino Santa Monica's 41st year and we are feeling wonderful! Full list here: http://bit.ly/1kueCQz

From LA Mag: "After sampling the better part of Los Angeles’s 20,000 or so bistros, gastropubs, and grand halls of fine dining, restaurant critic Patric Kuh has named L.A.'s 75 best restaurants!"

From left to right Valentino Santa Monica's very own Chef Nico Chessa and Giuseppe Mollica, Special Events Valentino, join Ms. Sophie Gayot, from GAYOT.com - The Guide to the Good Life, and Letizia Miccoli, executive director of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West, Los Angeles, Valentino is honored and humbled to continue to receive the “'Marchio Ospitalita' – Ristoranti Italiani nel Mondo", the seal of Authenticity given by the Italian Government to restaurants passing an extensive series of rigorous tests: from the percentage of Italian wines on their list, to the menu being written in perfect Italian, from one Italian speaking person to engage with customers, to the quality of the extra virgin olive oil.

Best Italian in LA, although the main room is VERY noisy, so we prefer the others. Never had a bad dish or martini, and great staff

If you got the dough, this place is one swanky establishment. Wine is amazing and I'd recommend the grilled octopus with squid ink. Delicious!

Wonderful dinner. Came here to celebrate dude's birthday since he really likes Italian food. They were kind enough to seat us at a corner booth, it was comfortable and spacious. Our waiter came over to take our drinks order right away and went over the menu items and specials with us. We decided to go with the 5 course prix menu to make things easy, there were many options on the 5 course meal, which was very nice. Service was extremely attentive, came over and refilled out drinks regularly. The food was very tasty and well presented, traditionally prepared, and retained its authenticity. The stuffed calamari was my favorite and a must order. So good. Prices are very reasonable, street parking was a bit difficult as everything had a time limit of 1 hour. Bathrooms are nice and clean.

Had good reviews on Google (4.4 stars) and close to where I was staying. Ordered the: 1. Lobster farro salad, which was too sour with the unripe blood oranges, 2. Baked ricotta, spinach and aspargus salad, where the spinach was too oily and the ricotta was too dry, but the spinach was fresh, 3. The wild salmon, which was not seasoned (we wish there were more capers for some damn salt), however the salmon was cooked excellently, 4. The duck ragu lasagna, where the duck ragu was actually pretty good, but the pasta tasted like it had something wrong with the mozzarella cheese. Overall, the meal was just "ok", but I had higher expectations, which made it worse. I was hoping to be blown away. Perhaps they should take down the 2008 Michelin Star, as they certainly aren't living up to those standards anymore.

Valentino is an absolute gem! The food, the wine, the service... everything is impeccable and of the utmost quality. In a city where restaurants come and go every week, Valentino has amazing staying power. Be sure to consider the wine cellar for special events. It's simply stunning!
