Located in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge at the Gateway to the Beautiful Hood River Valley, the Vagabond Lodge is the ideal place for you to stay while exploring the area.

The Vagabond Lodge was built by the Cranmer family on the west end of Hood River, Oregon, in 1954. The Lodge is still family-owned and has added several buildings to share the area with more guests.

The hotel came to be after Lucy Cranmer moved to Hood River after seeing a picture in a magazine of children playing in the apple orchards with Mt Hood in the background.  She thought that if such a beautiful place existed, she would like to live there. After moving to Hood River, the family built an eight-room motel, living in two of the rooms.

The grounds now include five buildings, nestled on five plus acres of quiet, wooded grounds situated on the cliffs overlooking the Columbia River, with most rooms having stunning views of the gorge. The courtyard is filled with native trees and wildflowers, picnic areas, and a playground. Ponderosa Pines tower 110 feet over the courtyard, while Bald Eagles float by on the Gorge winds that make Hood River an internationally known windsurfing destination.

Our grounds also include picnic areas with tables, and a barbecue and/or smoker is available (call ahead). We have a playground with swings, a big slide, and a sand digger.  We just recently expanded our grounds out back by the cliff, and put in a couple viewpoints to sit and take in the view.

Just named 'Green Partner 2014' by Trip Advisor, our soap, shampoo, and other amenities are from the Environmentally Sensitive Amenities (ESA) collection.  They are made using minimal preservatives, feature crafted, vegetable based soaps, and the use of post consumer non-bleached board imprinted with soy based inks.

We currently have 42 rooms, including 7 suites to choose from, most with views of the Columbia River, some with kitchens, and some with Jacuzzis. We have something for you no matter what you're looking for! All of our rooms have cable TV, a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, hair dryer, and Wi-Fi included for free.

In order to accommodate more guests, we are expanding our property by adding another building, currently under construction, to be completed in the Spring of 2014! This project will add 15 rooms; they will have views of our courtyard, balconies, and a nice finish.

We look forward to your stay with us!

The double queen room was very large, almost as an entire apartment, with a nice terrace and good quality amenities, which included a pair of wine glasses and a bottle opener. The bathroom, too, was of unusual size, and everything was clean and in good standing. Staff at the concierge was very corteous, from the moment they contacted us over the phone before our arrival. Parking is easy, and the view over the river is even more enjoyed when sitting at benches surrounded by a nicely maintained garden. The only drawback, the background noise of I-84, which is very close to the lodge. I wish they built some sort of acoustic insulation to muffle it. Otherwise the location is extremely convenient, close to downtown Hood River and virtually adjacent to the freeway entrance.

We were in Room 41. Our room had a very nice view, staff are friendly, the room was quiet, dog friendly, and the amenities were nice. Unfortunately the carpet is very soiled, thin and stained (glad I brought slippers). The bathroom door is falling off its hinges and doesn't fully close. The bathroom door nearly touches the toilet so it's a bit of an acrobatic trick to close the door inside the cramped bathroom. The window doesn't open unless you He-Man it. The beds are lumpy with back-breaking Sarlac Pits in the center. There are cobwebs everywhere on the grounds and the directional signs are very hard to read. Overall it's on par for the price so I'd call it acceptable.

The interior is a bit dated, but if you are looking for a place to sleep and have a shower this place is a great deal. It's safe and easy to get in and out of your room. They allow dogs! And every room has air conditioning!

Everything about this place is great. The staff are very friendly - from the very first call to make a reservation they were courteous and pleasant. The rooms were very comfortable, well maintained and perfectly clean. Our rooms were river view and we enjoyed relaxing and watching the river flow by. The price is a bargain for what you get. We will definitely go back!

We stayed in the Eagle Creek Glampin Tents at Vagabond Lodge. The tent is quite nice and sits above the ground on a constructed hardwood deck. Bed is a standard hotel bed, so quite comfortable with sheets and pillows. The three LED lanterns in the tent, with an additional one provided by the front desk, are a little dark for reading at night, so bring your own if you are worried about brightness. In front of the tent, there's a small picnic table that slant downwards toward the river. There's also a small patch for a chairs. There is no fire pit or grill, so bring your own if you want to prepare food on site. The real star is the view - you wake up to a beautiful panorama of the Columbia and hills. The outdoor shower is awesome, and about a 30-second walk from the tent. Turn on the hot water about 3-5 minutes before you want to use it as it may take a bit for the hot water to be flowing. The port-a-potty is about a 3 minute walk away. Overall, I would definitely stay in the Glamping tent again!

I enjoyed staying at this hotel and would certainly stay again. I'm trying to find anything that I really found to be outstanding here and I'm drawing a blank unfortunately. The room that I stayed in had a great view, though it was on the bottom floor and came with the requisite walking and other other noises from the top floor dwellers. Everything was comfortable and it has easy access to grocery stores and downtown Hood River. The wifi was decent, which is much better than most so I count that as a positive.

Our room is great! We have a balcony that overlooks the river and it's not far from town. It is a little dated, but it's by no means run down. I really enjoy staying here.
