Durango Area Trails and Public Lands To Reopen Thursday!

For open/closed info and trail conditions, go to https://www.trails2000.org/

National Forest, BLM, and City announce lifting of closures
The San Juan National Forest (SJNF), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and City of Durango announced they will reopen trails and public lands on Thursday, June 21, at 3pm. SJNF will rescind the Stage 3 Closure Order that has been in place since June 12. BLM in the Durango area that closed last week will also reopen.

An area around the active 416 and Burro Fires will remain closed to public entry, including the segments of the Colorado Trail from Molas Pass to the Junction Creek terminus. The BLM lands and the rest of the SJNF will remain in Stage 2 fire restrictions.

The City of Durango will also reopen trails and open space, including the following areas: Overend Mountain Park; Chapman Hill and the FLC Mesa; City Open Space accessing Animas City Mountain; Dalla Mountain Park; Gardella; Horse Gulch; Mercy Open Space in Three Springs; Off Leash Area; Oxbow Preserve; Twin Buttes; Natural Surface Trails in City Open Space. Lake Nighthorse and the surrounding shoreline will reopen Friday (6/22) at 7am. Fire and smoking restrictions on city owned property remain in effect.

Durango Fire Update- June 19, 2018

The rain from last weekend (June 16 & 17) has given firefighters the upper hand on the 416 Fire, located Northwest of Durango, Colorado. While the fire is still burning in the backcountry, the Highway 550 corridor between downtown Durango and Purgatory Resort, plus Silverton further North, is open.

Homes and condos at and near Purgatory are accessible and available to use, and the air quality is greatly improved with little or no smoke in the last two days. The photo seen here was made by Hal at 10:17am on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, in the Animas Valley between Durango and Purgatory. Forest damage from the fire is evident, but as you can see from the blue sky above, air quality at the time of this photo is very good.

The fire is about 40% contained and currently is burning towards the west into the wilderness, with crews still working on containment and structure protection. The reports after the weekend rains were VERY positive regarding progress with continued containment, but authorities are cautioning us that winds and dry conditions may slow that progress in the coming days.

Golfers should know that the Glacier Club Valley Course and Mine Shaft Grill will reopen this Friday, June 22, so contact us to book a condo at Tamarron Resort and be eligible to reserve your tee time. Dalton Ranch Golf Club and Hillcrest Golf have been able to remain open throughout the fire. This means that three golf courses within 20 minutes of each other are open for play in Durango.

National Forest trails, City Open Space and BLM trails are still currently closed to public use, and we will keep you posted on as we receive notifications for changes to these conditions.

Mesa Verde National Park, a designated World Heritage Site, is open and operating with normal summer hours and tours. The Park is about a 40-minute drive from downtown Durango.

According to the website, The Durango Train has suspended operations through June 30. Contact the Train via link below to find out about making reservations after that date.

Purgatory Resort is planning to reopen summer activities as soon as possible, based on re-staffing facilities as well as conforming to National Forest guidelines.

Restaurants, galleries, stores, museums, and much more are fully open in downtown Durango. A drive on the San Juan Scenic Byway is fully accessible, and this is one very popular activity enjoyed during summer by kids of all ages.

Yes, Durango is OPEN!
