Did you know that you can see streets of downtown Raleigh in elevation data from NC sample dataset?

Use r.shaded.pca module from GRASS 7 addons to find out!

r.shaded.pca uses technique described by Devereux, Amable, and Crow: Visualisation of LiDAR terrain models for archaeological feature detection in Antiquity, (2008).

Command to run:
r.shaded.pca input=elevation output=elevation_pca_shaded zmult=100

Command to install:
g.extension extension=r.shaded.pca

(Thanks to Martin Landa for online addons manual pages.)

Note that browser or Google+ can blur the image, so try the module yourself in GRASS to explore the results.
