Pope Francis has called for 2015 to be the “Year of Consecrated Life” which will begin at the start of Advent on Nov. 30, 2014, and last until until Feb. 6, 2016, the World Day of Consecrated Life.

Proclaiming Jesus through education and Christian formation.
Introduction

We, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, sustained by prayer and vowed life in community, proclaim Jesus through education and Christian formation in the spirit of our founder, Saint Angela Merici.

The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph trace their origin to Saint Angela Merici, who founded the Company of Saint Ursula in Brescia, Italy, in 1535. In 1858, Bishop Martin John Spalding invited the Ursulines from Straubing, Bavaria, to establish a foundation in Louisville, Ky.

At the request of Father Paul Joseph Volk, five Ursuline Sisters came from Louisville in 1874 to establish Mount Sai...nt Joseph Academy, a school in western Daviess County at the site that is now Maple Mount, Ky. In 1912, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph became an autonomous congregation.

In 1925, the Sisters continued their dedication to education and opened Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women. The location was transferred to Owensboro in 1950 where it became co-educational and changed its name to Brescia College (now known as Brescia University).

Mount Saint Joseph Academy closed in 1983, but in its place arose the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center, a center for spiritual, cultural and educational enrichment.

Currently numbering over 170, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph share their many talents in the areas of education, ecclesial or church ministry, social outreach and justice advocacy, and in ministries involving body, mind, and spirit. The sisters minister in Kentucky, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and in Chile, South America.
