Brunei, Korea Welcome First Dual Graduate Degree Students

A joint initiative between Universiti Brunei Darussalam #UBD and Korea University through their partnership in the International Consortium of Universities for the Studies of Biodiversity and the Environment #iCUBE was recently realised with it’s first pair of Dual Graduate Degree students.
Under the initiative, Korea University candidate Yujin Roh and UBD candidate Adrian Suhaili had the opportunity to study in one another's countries.
A Masters candidate at the College of Life Science and Biotechnology, Yujin arrived in UBD late August, spending one semester at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre #ubdKBFSC to undertake research on carbon stock and flux of coarse woody debris in intact tropical Dipterocarp forests. Her research is supervised by academics from the Faculty of Science, Dr Faizah Metali and Dr Rahayu Sukmaria Sukri.
Coarse woody debris in forests play important roles in carbon and nutrient cycles. Particularly, coarse woody debris in tropical forests are potentially a significant component of the stocks and fluxes of carbon cycles, she explained. However, the stocks and fluxes of coarse woody debris in Asian tropical forests are relatively unknown. Hence, Yujin hopes to provide data to predict and model the changes of carbon in tropical forests in Brunei under climate change.

Researchers Convert Invasive Acacia Species to Bio-Products as a Potential Alternative to Oil and Gas
The research takes on a multidisciplinary approach to tackle contemporary changes. Dr Saifullah explained that the study aims to find ways to produce renewable fuels and products and reduce the loss of biodiversity in Brunei. By converting the Acacia species to biofuel through pyrolysis, the team will not only reduce the number of invasive Acacias in the country, but also produce something useful out of it. The initiative is a good resource and feedstock for Brunei Darussalam if the country were to one day embark on a potential bio-refinery industry, Dr Saifullah said.
The project is conducted on small-scale in a laboratory and will be completed in two stages. Firstly, the properties of biomass will be evaluated so that a suitable pyrolysis process can be designed. In the second stage, the biomass will be pyrolysed to produce the biofuel and the characterisation of the product will be carried out to obtain its quality and yield.
An interfaculty research team is working on an alternative solution to manage the growth of invasive Acacia species in Brunei. The research team comprised Dr Rahayu Sukmaria Sukri from the Faculty of Science #ubdFOS / Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental #ubdIBER, Dr Muhd Saifullah Abu Bakar and Dr Abdul K Azad from the Faculty of Integrated Technologies #ubdFIT, and Ashfaq Ahmed, a PhD student in Chemical and Process Engineering.
