Last week MS Principal Chad Fairey joined UNIS M3 students on a retreat at Camp Getaway. Chad offered this reflection on the experience:

"Over the course of three days, students were able to engage in experiences that challenged their physical courage --- rock-climbing and bungee jumping among them --- as well as their minds and spirits. Service learning was woven deeply into their experience, and our students had the opportunity to engage on a 4-mile clean-up hike along the Appalachian Trail, an in-depth exploration of sustainability on a working farm, and the opportunity to construct a composting facility from scratch. I had the pleasure of joining the students for their second afternoon and evening, as well as the following morning --- their happiness, confidence borne from overcoming challenge, and sheer joy from being in nature and connecting with each other was both palpable and inspiring. We brought some of their composting bins back with us on the bus, and look forward to working with the UNIS facilities team to develop some similar resources here on our very own campus in Manhattan. Several days spent in the verdant wilderness, on the tranquil waters of a spring-fed lake, and hiking under the humbling expanse of a star-studded evening sky had a visible effect on our city-dwelling students; many of them reflected on how powerful an experience it was to be away from the city, to dive into nature, and to have that precious sense of balance. We rounded out the evening with a fascinating show of live wildlife predators, a night hike, and scary stor...
