Many thanks to all of our valued Gladiator Members and other fans who have responded with messages of support and/or offers to participate in our first live underground combat test event in New Zealand in March.

We are currently working our way through the responses so please bear with us if you don’t hear back immediately. We are grateful for your support and will endeavour to reply to everyone as soon as we can.

Radio Communication Progress:

We have made some very exciting progress on the communications side of the Lorica tech over the last three months. The data from the sensors is relayed to on board microcontrollers located throughout the suit, which process the impact data in real time. In the prototype suits we used radios to transmit peak data to a scoring computer. With the recent development work completed, in addition to peak data from radios, we are now able to capture and transmit continuous data from all sensors at a sample rate of 10,000 per second (10kHz) using WiFi. Due to the number of sensors in the suit this has required some serious development work and the addition of specialised highly secure WiFi communications software at frequencies that are able to carry large data loads. We can’t wait to start combat testing the Lorica and to see the sort of picture that emerges from this data. Over time we hope that it will give us the ability to analyse the most effective offensive and defensive techniques in weapons martial arts. The collection and analysis of that data would not be possible without the breakthrough work on optimising the communications from our software engineers.

UWM’s FIRST CALL TO ARMS – CALLING UWM’s GLADIATOR MEMBERS: After overcoming a range of major R&D challenges, UWM has entered the final stages of delivering our Next Gen Lorica MkII armour for our first Vital Target Combat (VTC) Underground Test Events next year. UWM plans to run our first VTC event next year in mid-late March 2016 in Wellington, New Zealand.

We’re prioritising our search for fighters from within the UWM Gladiator Membership Programme (Gladiator Members) and our own private networks to form the first group of test fighters to compete in the Lorica MkII in Weapons Martial Arts (WMA) combat.

Using blunt but real UWM accredited martial arts weapons, UWM’s advanced body armour system, with embedded force measurement technology, bio-medical data software (based on blunt trauma impact to vital targets) will scientifically determine the victor of each fight.

We are seeking approximately half a dozen WMA fighters, ideally from a variety of WMA disciplines, to become part of pioneering global martial arts history.

UWM is an EXTREME SPORT unlike any other, and weapons martial arts (WMA) combat is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, even in body armour. To fight in UWM you need to be highly experienced, well-trained, tough, fit and resilient (mentally and physically) and acknowledge and accept all risks involved.
UWM’s Gladiator members have today been invited to apply to fight in UWM’s VTC 1. You can find out more about becoming a Gladiator Member at http://uwm.tv/shop/membership/

More information about UWM can be found at www.uwm.tv

Sponsorship - if any organisation is interested in sponsoring this event, please let us know by emailing us at admin@uwm.tv using the subject Sponsorship Request.

Hi Oliver - thanks for your message. The training suits are still some way off as we are still developing and refining the designs for the production suits. These were tested in full contact combat for the first time at the VTC1 event we recently held. We are very keen to produce and release training suits but realistically they may be another 12-18 months away. Please keep following us on Facebook for updates on our progress or subscribe to our Newsletter at uwm.tv for regular updates. Thanks for your interest in the Lorica and UWM!

The UWM team recently conducted a series of fit and strike tests of the Mark II Lorica armour. During the tests the Mark II suit which is constructed of a carbon fibre mix was struck with a range of weapons including a staff, rattan sticks and various polycarbonate weapons. The test fighter then conducted a series of combat tests including sparring, bag drills and pad work.

The feedback from our fighter was overwhelmingly positive with the fighter saying that he felt less shock transfer than with the Mark I suits and felt "extremely well protected". He noted that the suits also had vastly improved articulation and range of movement allowing kicks to head height which was not possible with the previous suits. Due to the decreased weight of the Mark II suits, the fighter was able to keep fighting for longer and said they are much cooler than the Mark I suits which needed frequent "cooling" breaks for the fighters.

The suit components are now in New Jersey where the engineering team has commenced installation of the sensor tech.

Even our tireless team in the Wellington workshop need to down tools and enjoy a few hard-earned days rest.

Here are the Armour Production Team including Tim, Jixy, Peter, Hannah and Hannah with the management team and Tim's wife Rebecca enjoying a dinner to celebrate the milestone of completing testing of the first carbon fibre suit and reflecting on what an incredible year it has been.

The armor developed is completely badass and amazing, so try to stick with the futuristic armor. Only because unfortunately I feel most people would find the d fashioned armor to be cheesy. Also the futuristic armor seems more comfortable to wear and allows more mobility. Just some friendly thoughts. I'm loving this sport tho

Testing the Lorica Mk II - The Unified Weapons Master team recently completed a major milestone of impact and mobility testing of the new carbon fibre Lorica Mk II. Check out the video to see how it performed and how close we are to holding our first underground combat test event. We would love to know what you think so please leave your feedback for us in the comments below.

One FAQ is how "real" Unified Weapons Master will be: How real are the weapons? How forceful are the blows? The answer is that UWM is real fighting with real weapons, at full force, with very few rules but with high levels of safety.

UWM was born from a desire to celebrate the incredible skills of weapons fighters from around the world. That's why we've spent years inventing and refining this technology. The lifetime of dedication necessary to become a master in weapons martial arts deserves a truly global sport. That's why we do what we do. To honour, preserve and reignite interest in weapons martial arts.

Got more questions? We've got answers. Read more FAQs: http://bit.ly/UWMFAQ

Here's another picture of the Next Gen Lorica Mk II Helm in carbon fibre, that gives you more detail. What you can't easily see is the much improved airflow and ventilation channels designed into it. As many of you will know, high impact Weapons Martial Arts combat can be like a series of 50-100m sprints so good airflow for intense breathing and thermal management under severe armoured combat stress is critical.

UWM CEO David Pysden recently visited our US workshop to review progress on the new sensor and software solution designed for the production Lorica armour.

Our extended team includes highly specialised and experienced military and defence contractors. This team has now completed much of the hardware integration and software development work required to accurately and repeatably measure impacts to the armour in real time in the lab.

This photo shows the new ‘back end’ development software reading all channels of the helmet and torso simultaneously. This software will be used to refine and tune the sensors and scoring algorithms once the production suits are delivered to our US workshop.

"Mark continued to train, teach, and perform. She learned everything in Fu’s system, and could work anything from a spear to an iron fan. Her specialty though was that wudang double-edged sword, which she'd perform with before stadium-capacity crowds.”

This Man's Life article shares the interesting story about the woman behind martial arts superstar Donnie Yen: his mother, Bow Sim Mark. Yen explains, “When I was a little kid, my mother used to drag me out of bed in the morning and make me train with her for an hour before I went to school. I hated it then, but if it wasn't for my mother, I wouldn't be sitting here today.”

It's legendary fighters like Bow Sim Mark that inspired us to design the Lorica Amazon, our specifically-designed armour to ensure the best fighters in the world enter the UWM area. Read Bow Sim Mark’s story: http://bit.ly/1IiSgCP Learn more about Lorica Amazon: http://bit.ly/LoricaAmazon
