5 Places to Sip on Colombian Coffee in Bogotá
You want to wrap your hands around a warm mug and sip on some of the best coffee Colombia has to offer, but where do you go? The following places in Bogotá will treat your taste buds to wonderful Colombian coffee. Azahar Don’t let the fact that the café is actually a shipping container turn you away. Their coffee is delicious and the small space creates a casual, cozy experience. The company negotiates directly with various coffee farmers. They even hand-sort the beans during the production process to ensure quality. Azahar is located near a cool area in Bogotá called Parque 93, where the pretty park is surrounded by a lot of chic restaurants and bars. Amor Perfecto Also located in a must-see part of Bogotá, Amor Perfecto has what your taste buds crave. The café is situated a few blocks from Zona G, a great restaurant district. It offers Arabica beans grown at an altitude between 800 and 2,000 meters above sea level – which means the final product has a fuller body and fruity aroma. Some baristas from Amor Perfecto even won international coffee-making competitions. Hacienda Coloma There’s nothing like tasting coffee you helped make – from sorting and roasting the beans to brewing the perfect cup. Hacienda Coloma, outside of Bogotá, is a serene coffee farm where visitors learn how coffee is made through a step-by-step interactive process. The expert guides explain all the factors that come together to make a great batch of beans. And at the end, visitors can sit back and sip on the coffee they helped brew using a unique system that doesn’t compromise the coffee’s taste. Tinto in La Candelaria It’s hard not to notice the coffee vendors on the streets of Bogotá loudly advertising their “tinto.” It’s what Colombians call coffee and it’s worth taking a break from sightseeing to enjoy what’s inside that small plastic cup. The coffee might be sweeter and lighter than what you’re used to and it’s normally served from one of the thermoses the vendors lugs around town. This is the stuff many Colombians drink daily. This is the stuff Colombians will hold in one hand, and an empanada in the other. It’s the people’s coffee and it can be enjoyed while exploring Bogotá’s historic district called La Candelaria. Juan Valdez and/or Oma If the first two places on this list cater to coffee connoisseurs and tinto is coffee from the street, then Juan Valdez and Oma fall somewhere in between. They are rivalry coffee chains located all over Bogotá. Now some people might be opposed to suggesting cafes that are so common, but it’s interesting to taste the coffee so many Colombians drink while having business meetings, studying or just people watching. Let’s put it this way: If you lived in a country without Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, then visited a country where there was a Starbucks or DD on every corner, wouldn’t you be curious to see what all the hype was about? That’s how it is with Oma and Juan Valdez. Both are worth visiting just to compare against the coffee giants in your own country. If you want to explore other parts of the country or still haven’t quenched your thirst for Colombian coffee, consider taking a 3-day Coffee Region Tour. You’ll stay on a coffee farm surrounded by beautiful mountainous landscapes and learn more about the unique production process.
