Sushi rolls scoot around our customers via a conveyor belt as there's no need to wait for your order here at Umi...Umi Sushi + Tapas is a restaurant and bar with unique presentation of the traditional and modern style Japanese cuisine.

"Big Unit" conveyor belt surrounds the sushi chefs and snakes around the dining area, carrying fresh sushi rolls to you.  Our diners then grab the small plates of sushi - 22 kinds of them usually on the belt - as they scoot by.  More variety can be ordered, and a full assortment of Japanese cuisine is available to order from the kitchen including popular ramen noodles soups.  We work hard to offer what we enjoy back in Japan, with a little twist and creativity to adjust to the local preference.

Set in the beautiful Blue Back Square, the interior features cutting edge modern design with abstract painting by rising star Carlos Peña decorating the walls.  The curved, illuminating bar is a focal point where locals and area workers gather for a drink.  The conveyor belt of course brings the unmistakably modern and Japanese sentiment to the restaurant.

It's good basic and fresh sushi rolls. Tues special is very good. I wouldn't pay full price though...And it's not just chicken as others said. There is shrimp tempura, rainbow roll, spicy tuna, salmon and lots more....something for everyone even folks that don't like sushi.

I drive from in from Springfield, MA (40 min!) just to eat here every few weeks. Can't really say anything negative, other than I'm not a fan of the BLT roll. Luckily for me, there's about 10 others to choose from!

Belt was almost always entirely empty, but could ask waiter for specific things. BLT sushi is weird. Wished for more depth in "traditional" rolls on the belt instead of chicken.

Find me another place within a 20 mile radius that has the same sushi conveyor belt that this place has. You can't. Try crossing the pacific for that one. Overall, the sushi is excellent and the employees are quite cordial. It's like a little piece of tokyo that has fallen on the heads of Blue Back Square.

Slow service getting seated and getting drinks. The sushi was just OK. Nothing spectacular. The ikura tasted slightly off, sweet as opposed to salty as it should. The bartender was more preoccupied on serving her friends than in providing good, consistent service. Would think about it twice before coming back.

I've been to other conveyor belt sushi places, even one in the mall in West Nyack, NY that are better than Umi. Why? Well, at those other places the prices are lower, the variety is better, the fish is fresher and the rolls are far more creative. I get it that Umi is supposed to be "trendy" because it's in Blue Back but that doesn't justify the lackluster selection and high prices. Save your money and go to Sakura Garden at Bishop's Corner where the sushi is all you can eat plus a huge buffet for far less than you would pay here. Plus, I think the sushi there is better than Umi. I am a native New Yorker and have been to many great sushi places and even though I'm realistic about what to expect in West Hartford, Umi disappointed me. By the way I agree with the reviewer below that they should offer traditional nigiri sushi and not just rolls.

Their selection is nice and the food is great. Service is attentive. It's a great place to stop by to fix a sushi craving.
