St. Nicholas Day in Ukraine
St. Nicholas Day is a very special holiday for Ukrainian children and adults. In Ukraine and other Eastern Christian countries it is celebrated on December 19 (unlike Western Christian countries, where it is celebrated on December, 6).
Tradition to celebrate St. Nicholas Day came to Ukraine with the Christianity during the rule of the prince Vsevolod Yaroslavovich (years 1088-1089). Saint Nicholas always considered to be patron saint for children.

Nowadays preparations and presents
Shortly before the holiday Ukrainian children (often with the help of their parents) write letters to Saint Nicholas in which all their dearest wishes are listed – material (new toys or other goods) and spiritual (health and happiness for parents, relatives and friends). The fulfillment of the material wish depends on the child’s behavior during the year. For those who behaved well St. Nicholas will definitely prepare the present, and even for those who did not there will be something pleasant (sweets, for example) if they promise to make good.

St. Nicholas Day presents can be different. It is up to parents to decide what gift to put under the child’s pillow (sweets, a toy, a book etc.). Of course, most of the parents consider their children wishes when they choose a gift.

At nurseries and schools children with teachers’ help prepare different sketches, sing songs and recite poems about Saint Nicholas.

For those children who don’t have parents different charity organizations prepare St. Nicholas Day gifts.

Concerts and celebrations with dancing, singing and performing are hold on the eve of December 19, and every child gets his present for holiday.

St. Nicholas Day in Ukraine is a really bright and joyful holiday. Parents and grandparents tell the children story of St. Nicholas life and teach them to be as kind, laborious, charitable, honest as Saint Nicholas was.

Ukrainians believe that in the night of December 19 all their sincere wishes will be heard and fulfilled.

What do you know about bograch? ;)
The Carpathian Cuisine: Authentic Recipes and History

Bograch or bogrács is a traditional Hungarian soup that made its way in the Carpathian cuisine. It is made from pork lard, meat and vegetables like carrots. The soup has a tingly flavor thanks to the spices and ground sweet pepper the cooks usually add into the dish.

1 Kohlrabi (about 10 cm in diameter)

Take a pot and put it on a medium flame. Wait until it warms up. Cut the smoked salo into thin pieces, fry until it becomes pink. Take it out with a wooden spoon, place on a separate plate.
Finely cut the onions, add grease or oil into the pot and fry. Add a small amount of water and let the onions cool down. At once add red ground pepper, mix and throw in meat cut into cubes and chopped hooves.

Ukrainian lessons with http://learn-ukrainian.org.ua

Mix thoroughly; add a small amount of water in a few minutes. The meat should be stewed, not boiled. Then add salt, ground black pepper, 1-2 lavender leaves. Gradually add water enough for the bograch to cook. The mass should resemble goulash, not a soup.

What do you know about mamalyga? ;)
The Carpathian Cuisine: Authentic Recipes and History

One of the most iconic Carpathian dishes, mamalyga, originally comes from Romanian cuisine. The porridge is made of yellow maize flour and is traditionally served with sour cream and brynza. The Hutsul dish has a special feature that should be noted: after it's cooked, you have to place it on a wooden board or a fresh towel instead of a plate so that mamalyga keeps its original flavor. The dish often replaces bread.

Ukrainian Winter School in Lviv with @Ukrainian Language and Culture School 2019

Ingredients:

2 cups of corn flour
6 glasses of water
brynza cheese
100 grams of smoked salo and pork rinds
salt hard
cheese
fried onions
Preparation:

Learn Ukrainian with learn-ukrainian.org.ua

Fry the corn flour on a dry skillet until an even golden color and a pleasant smell of fried corn.
Take a large pot. Add water, salt, 4 tablespoons of flour and bring to a boil. Sieve the rest of flour into the boiling water. Stir continuously with a wooden spoon and press the flour to the walls for the pot. Cook for 25-30 minutes.
Reduce the heat and boil for 10-15 more minutes while stirring continuously until the mass thickens. To tell if mamalyga is ready, take a wooden roller or a wooden spoon and lower it in a pot. If the mass doesn't stick to the wooden utensil, mamalyga is ready.

Ukrainian classes by skype with learn-ukrainian.org.ua

Using a wet spoon and spatula, separate mamalyga from the pot walls. Put on a wooden board or a towel. Note: don't put mamalyga on a plate, as it will become too dry and lose its flavor. Cut the dish with a thick thread.
Put bryza, sour cream, pork rind and fried onions in separate plates. You can add ingredients to mamalyga up to your taste.

Have you heard about Ivan Bohdan? He came to America in 1608 and probably has mixed the DNA into most of the American colonials who created this country.

Bohdan arrived in 1608, a year after the founding of Jamestown. He and several other men, noted as Poles and Germans, were recruited by Capt. Christopher Newport at the behest of Capt. John Smith, then president of the Jamestown colony, because they possessed a variety of practical skills lacking among the English settlers who were struggling to survive. Bohdan, for example, was described as an expert in making pitch and tar necessary in the building and repair of wooden boats back then. Others were talented in making glassware, an important industry in the colonies.

Smith may have learned first-hand about the industrious Poles and Germans – and Ukrainians – in yet another possible connection with Ukraine. Serving as a mercenary, Smith fought in wars against the Ottoman Turks but was wounded, captured and sold as a slave. His escape route may have taken him through parts of what is now Ukraine, including Crimea, and then through the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Virginia colony was about to hold its first election, but the English political leaders denied voting privileges to the Poles and other non-British settlers – despite their important contributions.

The Poles, however, decided to strike and took up the slogan, “No vote. No work.” The tactic worked, and English soon changed their stance on who could vote in America’s first legislative election.

Should we spell the city in Ukraine "Kiev" or "Kyiv"? Why?
And in today's news, get used to reading and writing "Kyiv" instead of "Kiev" my friends...
Now Ukrainians tirelessly agitate to write Kyiv, not Kiev. Because Kiev (Киев) is from the Russian language, and Kyiv (Київ) from the Ukrainian. Now official language of Ukraine is obviously Ukrainian and having a conflict with Russia we are making efforts to reject any russian origins. But if you compare queries on Google, ppl ask more Kiev, than Kyiv.
