CENTENARY OF THE MODERN ART GALLERY IN THE PALAZZO PITTI

To celebrate the centenary of its foundation, Pitti Palace Gallery of Modern Art has dedicated an exhibition to the twentieth-century collections held by the museum. In fact, despite the Gallery of Modern Art is known for being the museum that has the largest collection of Macchiaioli paintings in the world, you probably do not know all the interesting collection of twentieth-century works until now confined in the stores. The show tends to attract attention to this museum, until now submerged due to a lack of exhibition space.

Piazza della Signoria

Around the gallery there are some areas that really warrant a visit and first on the list is the Piazza della Signoria. Here besides this impressive Palazzo Vecchio, you can find the "Nettuno" fountain also called "Biancone", built in the second half of the 500th century and designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati. In 2006 a little boy carelessly climbed the sculpture and eventually one of the arms broke off but fortunately was quickly reattached, "like old".
Right in front of the "Palazzo Vecchio" the symbols of liberty two sculptures, the famous David of Michelangelo, where the 1503 original held in the "Galleria dell'Accademia" and "Ercole e Caco di Baccio Bandinelli".
The "Loggia dei Lanzi" in the forbidden piazza also called "Loggia dell'Orcagna" named after its designer. The famous bronze "Perseo" by Cellini stands out and brought back to its antique brilliance when it was restored a few years ago and the "Ratto delle Sabine di Giambologna" (the rape of the Giambologna Sabine women).

Uffizi room 1 archeologica

Assembled in this room are archaeological pieces in marble, most of which come from Rome.
Many of them are reliefs that are casts of those on the Ara Pacis (Altar of Augustan Peace); others, of remarkable quality, are the Temple of Vesta and the Scene of Sacrifice originating from a 2nd century Hadrian frieze.
In addition, there is a sarcophagus with the Labours of Hercules, in which he is illustrated at various ages, recalling those periods of his life.

Uffizi's History - part 3

A focal point in the history of the Florentine collections came in 1737, when the end came for the Medici dynasty the last heiress, Anna Maria Luisa residing in the palace, moved to France to marry the king of Lorena and signed an agreement that all her artistic possessions used for public show were not to be removed from Florence.
With the arrival of the Lorena family many changes took place and the neoclassical style of the seven hundreds took a turn towards the creations of monumental staircases and hallways there were many increments, transferring of art works (scientific instruments were taken to the museum of "La specola") and unfortunately some were sold, like in the case of the "Armeria".
In contrast a new age aroused attention for other styles and techniques of art work like archaeological pieces it was at this time that the famous niobe art works were transfered from Rome and placed in a hall created purposely for them.

Vasari Corridor

The "Vasariano" corridor that most probably will arouse the visitor's imagination.
This Corridor a kilometre long, built for practical reasons, to link the "Medici" offices to the "Palazzo Pitti Galleria" at the time owned by the family, which today displays "Uffizi" paintings from the 600's and 700's and that of the artist self-portraits. A narrow passage where the entrance starts from the second corridor of the gallery, which runs along the Arno river stretching over the old bridge and eventually reaching "Palazzo Pitti". The concept from an architectural point of view of an elevated passage at that time was very innovative. The corridor also boasts a spectacular view of the river and the Santa Felicità church, from the corridor you can actually see the inside of the church just like the Medici did at the time; along the wall there is also a window that faces, which at one time was the family's private garden. Unfortunately before you visit this splendid corridor you have to book your ticket in advance.
