Working on an application which has been developed several years ago is even more difficult than building an app from scratch.

Geeking app was a real challenge and here's why:

1) We understood the logic of the existing codebase (which was, let's say, non-trivial).

2) We integrated Retrofit, RxJava, Kotlin, MVP architecture without rewriting existing codebase.

3) Our client integrated a set of ad networks, each one with its own implementation approach. Android team had to study each individual ad SDKs approach and design a way to integrate all of them together.

Developing this app wasn't easy, but the result is worth it: http://bit.ly/2yoe90D

Still using Java for Android app development? Dealing with null pointer exceptions, boilerplate code, and SAM-conversions?

Say goodbye to these irritating things and start using Kotlin, which is 100% interoperable with Java. As Kotlin is a functional language, it allows writing more elegant, expressive code.

☝️4 reasons to switch from Java to Kotlin right away:
1. Function purity
2. Higher-order functions
3. Immutability
4. You deliver the app on time with fewer bugs

Other neat Kotlin features and code example here:

Introverts are much more capable of becoming a leader than you might think.

They are prevalent among "servant leaders", one of the most effective types of leaders.

As introverts listen carefully and are focused on helping others more than extraverts.

So don't try to make introverts more like extraverts, but rather assist introverts to be more confident about their own leadership capability.

10,000 Hours with Reid Hoffman: 16 lessons Learned:

1. People are complicated and flawed. Root for their better angels.
2. The best way to get a busy person’s attention: Help them.
3. Keep it simple and move fast when conceiving strategies and making decisions.
4. Every weakness has a corresponding strength.
5. The values that actually shape a culture have both upside and downside.
6. Understand someone’s “alpha” tendencies and how that drives them.
7. Self-deception watch: even those who say they don’t need or want flattery, sometimes still need it.
8. Be clear on your specific level of engagement on a project.
9. Sketch three possible outcomes for a project: the likely upside, likely ‘regular’, and likely downside scenarios.
10. A key to making good partnerships great: Identify and emphasize any misaligned incentives.
11. Reason is the steering wheel. Emotion is the gas pedal.
12. Trade up on trust even if it means you trade down on competency.
13. Tell the truth. Don’t reflexively kiss ass to powerful people.
14. Respect the shadow power.
15. Make people genuine partners and they’ll work harder.
16. Final: The people around you change you in myriad unconscious ways

Think like a leader from the start:
1. Think big - understand in a deep way how you create value for the business
2. Find opportunities to speak up with new ideas - voice them, take the risks and implement them
3. Get comfortable with debate and conflict - a lot of questions and concerns will end up in your inbox
So invest in building relationships - that's the best investment you can make as a leader.
