Did you know that 758 million people in the world are illiterate? Literacy is vital for sustainable development in the 21st century, yet too many young people, adults and especially women and girls are not able to write their own future. On 8 September we mark 50 years of International #LiteracyDay! Learn more here: on.unesco.org/2aqpIY7
The world has changed since 1966 – but our determination to provide every woman and man with the skills, capacities and opportunities to become everything they wish, in dignity and respect, remains as firm as ever. Literacy is a foundation to build a more sustainable future for all.

The 2016 Global Education Monitoring Report will be released on 6 September at events in over 50 countries, including major events in London, Kigali, Jakarta, and Medellin. Join us for the first ever digital launch of the report.
This report is the first in a fifteen year series, which will monitor the state of education in the new framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The first report in the series, the 2016 Report, will establish a new monitoring framework for education post-2015, and examine key financing and governance challenges for the post-2015 era.
This Report, ‘Education for people and planet: Creating sustainable futures for all’ will examine the complex interrelationships and links between education and key development sectors.
It will determine which education strategies, policies and programmes are most effectively linked to the economic, social, environmental and political priorities of the new sustainable development agenda.
This Hangout On Air is hosted by UNESCO. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

In the night of 22 to 23 August 1791, men and women, torn from Africa and sold into slavery, revolted against the slave system to obtain freedom and independence for ‪#‎Haiti‬, gained in 1804. The uprising was a turning point in human history, greatly impacting the establishment of universal ‪#‎humanrights‬, for which we are all indebted. We must ensure that the role played by the heroes of this story is better known & taught more widely. Transmitting this history is key for lasting ‪#‎peace‬, based on mutual understanding among peoples and full awareness of the dangers of racism. Today is the Intl Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade & its Abolition: http://on.unesco.org/2bxwjSm ‪#‎RememberSlavery‬
