The 2016 GEM Report Unesco Gender Review will be launched on 3 October at an event in Paris and will form part of UNESCO celebrations of International Day of the Girl Child. Diverse and high-profile panellists will recognise the many links between education and gender equality and explore their relationship with child, early and forced marriage. The presentations and panel discussion will build on longstanding acknowledgement that improving girls’ education and ensuring equitable educational opportunities for all girls and boys, and substantive gender equality are necessary for global social justice. While many States have strengthened the protection of their heritage on land, most of their underwater cultural heritage remains unprotected. The pillaging of underwater archaeological sites, as well as souvenir hunting, are growing problems. Many interesting recreational dive sites are disappearing at a rapid rate and many ancient wrecks have been torn apart in the search for treasure.
Treasure-hunting has caused the loss of many thousands of submerged archaeological sites, historic information and artefacts that had much to say, not only about our past, but also about how we can manage our present in a sustainable way. However, there is hope. Life is becoming more difficult for those seeking to profit from underwater heritage due to the pressure exerted by international legislation, especially from those States that adhere to the 2001 UNESCO Convention. The largest museum in the world rests under the water, beneath the oceans, lakes and rivers of every nation and on the high seas. From fossil evidence and early human settlements now drowned by rising seas after the ice age, to ancient cities and harbor, and millions of shipwrecks, this heritage speaks to who we are as humanity."It is an essential evidence of humanity’s past not yet put at its rightful place in the public conscience", according to famous archeologists James Delgado (Canada/USA) and Michel L’Hour (France).
The protection of underwater cultural heritage sites against pillage and commercial exploitation is the theme of an international conference, which takes place on 22 and 23 September 2016 at UNESCO. http://on.unesco.org/2cvLldw #underwaterheritage
