UNESCO mourns the loss of Shimon Peres. He was a great statesman, a great humanist, and a historic man of peace. Shimon Peres leaves an indelible mark on the history of the Middle East and, today, his message is more relevant than ever, to clear the path to peace and mutual respect across the region. A founder of the State of Israel, he remained until his very last days a man of ideas and values, a man of innovation and creative thinking, always searching to mobilize new hope and energy, always seeking new ways to promote dialogue and cooperation, especially through science, for which he was passionate. In March 2016, he addressed UNESCO with a lesson of life, saying: 'Look back on what you have accomplished and the dreams you have had. Continue to dream and you will remain young. Have the courage to dream big.' He will remain an endless source of inspiration, and it is with great sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, to the people of Israel. http://on.unesco.org/2dqQySi

Green Impact is centred on student mentors and auditors, over 1,000 each year, who support staff to green their workplaces through bespoke workbooks. It is currently being run in 270 organizations, with 1,889 Green Impact teams or departments, reaching 29,191 staff.

The 2016 GEM Report Unesco Gender Review will be launched on 3 October at an event in Paris and will form part of UNESCO celebrations of International Day of the Girl Child. Diverse and high-profile panellists will recognise the many links between education and gender equality and explore their relationship with child, early and forced marriage. The presentations and panel discussion will build on longstanding acknowledgement that improving girls’ education and ensuring equitable educational opportunities for all girls and boys, and substantive gender equality are necessary for global social justice. While many States have strengthened the protection of their heritage on land, most of their underwater cultural heritage remains unprotected. The pillaging of underwater archaeological sites, as well as souvenir hunting, are growing problems. Many interesting recreational dive sites are disappearing at a rapid rate and many ancient wrecks have been torn apart in the search for treasure.
Treasure-hunting has caused the loss of many thousands of submerged archaeological sites, historic information and artefacts that had much to say, not only about our past, but also about how we can manage our present in a sustainable way. However, there is hope. Life is becoming more difficult for those seeking to profit from underwater heritage due to the pressure exerted by international legislation, especially from those States that adhere to the 2001 UNESCO Convention.
