Researchers at #UCDavis have found that a gene, which is not active in some mothers, produces a breast milk sugar that influences the development of the community of gut bacteria in thier infants. The sugars produced by these mothers, called "secretors," are not digested by the infant, but instead nourish specific bacteria that colonize their babies' guts soon after birth. http://bit.ly/1IzsacV

#UCDavisResearch is helping prevent the next Ebola by catching new viruses before they break out. Jonna Mazet, Professor of Epidemiology and Disease Ecology and Director of the One Health Institute at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine​, has helped identify more than 800 new animal viruses, and is leading the effort to identify human infections by new animal viruses. #OneHealth  
With the Ebola outbreak not yet behind us, global health workers are already scrambling to prevent what could be the next big outbreak of an emerging disease caused by a virus that jumped from animals into humans. In Tanzania, an organization is trying a new approach to tracking these new viruses and preventing another pandemic. #

Growing up in Lima, Peru, Yael Saavedra recognized her passion to care for the underserved and her drive to achieve a rewarding profession within the #healthcare community.
