West Fjords, Iceland
Favorite Images of 2013
There is no doubt that Iceland is currently one of the hottest locations in the world for landscape photographers. I typically run two photography workshops there a year to simple handle the demand. And while Iceland doesn't contain an abundance or more accurately a diverse amount of wildlife, there are still animals to photograph, such as the adorable Icelandic puffin! Last year, after driving for nearly 14 hours across the country chasing the midnight sun, , and myself found our way to the incredibly remote West Fjords of Iceland. We were headed for Latrabjarg, home of both the Icelandic puffins and thousand foot cliffs that reach from the sea to the sky. Regardless of the fact that we were exhausted, landing at the location around 4am, we spent the next 4 hours laying amongst the cliff edges making friends with these beautiful animals and capturing wonderful images such as this one.
Camera: Canon 1Dx
Lens: Canon 70-200 2.8L IS II
Exposure: 1/125sec at f/8.0
In the end this image needed very little post processing, mostly thanks to the ISO performance of the 1dx and the sharpness of the 70-200 2.8L II lens. After removing a few distracting spots on the puffin in PS with the content aware brush, I applied a few small filters using 's Perfect Effects, mostly to add a touch of depth and slight shadow detail to the image. I than used luminosity masking to only add a sharpening layer to the mid tones of the image and wrapped things up with some slight vibrance and saturation adjustments so that the RAW files I was working with looked more like the scene I remember.
