A great option for hiking in Guanacaste Province is Rincon de la Vieja. This national park has nicely forested trails and some really interesting volcanic features like steam vents and bubbling mud pots. There's also a trail that leads to a couple of different waterfalls.

A gorgeous Violaceous Trogon we saw in Costa Rica. If you're looking for a great place to bird, head to Carara National Park. It's in a transition zone from tropical dry forest to tropical wet forest so it sees hundreds of species.

More on visiting this park here: http://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/birding-carara-national-park/
