This week Liang presented our work on PKI vulnerabilities at IMC'14. We measured how quickly the SSL certificates that may have been compromised by Heartbleed were revoked and reissued after the vulnerability was disclosed. A common assumption is that these operations occur at the same time, as reissuing compromised certificates without revoking them would not prevent attackers from conducting phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks. However, we found a significant gap between the rate of reissues and the rate of revocations. 73% of vulnerable certificates had yet to be reissued and 87% had yet to be revoked three weeks after Heartbleed was disclosed. The paper includes a longer discussion about the causes and implications of this problem.
The ability to revoke SSL certificates is key to protecting Web users from rogue sites trying to intercept secure communications over HTTPS. The SSL …

Today I watched +Abdalla Taha and Lorenzo Rande give an awesome presentation about their semester project to build a decentralized location sharing service. The code is on GitHub: https://github.com/ada86/geo-kadoh

Interesting report, from Symantec analysts, about a group that apparently sits on a large number of zero-day exploits and then uses them in quick succession as each vulnerability is found and disclosed. These attacks include Operation Aurora, the high profile attacks from March 2011 and several zero-day attacks using 2012 vulnerabilities.

After 2.5 exciting years building the WINE platform, I've said goodbye to Symantec Research Labs. I am joining the ECE department at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Middleware'13 word cloud

I was curious what are "hot" research topics nowadays, so I created a word cloud from the papers submitted to Middleware'13. Note that these are the 100 most common terms across all papers submitted, not the terms that are likely to identify individual papers (in technical terms, the frequency is weighted by Tf rather than Tf-Idf).

"Data" (as in Big Data or data-intensive) seems to be what most people are working on, but it's also interesting to observe how prominent are "performance" and "time", as opposed to other system properties like availability, fault-tolerance, security, etc.

I'd be happy to provide my R script, if that would help.
