Today marks the first day of the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season. While some long range forecasts indicate near normal or below normal activity in the Atlantic basin, it is important to remember that long range forecasts like this do not give you any information about the potential risk of your area being impacted. As repetitive as it may sound, it only takes one storm to impact you, regardless of how many other storms may form throughout the rest of the Atlantic basin. Whether your area is rarely impacted, or impacted often, coastal and inland areas around the Atlantic basin face the threat of storms every single year. It is extremely important to always make preparations before a storm threatens. Now is the time. Visit the National Hurricane Center and FEMA's sites below for hurricane preparedness information that can help you be ready for storms that may threaten you this season:

Here is something for the really weird category... Last year the NOAA Hurricane Hunters' high altitude G-IV jet, nicknamed Gonzo, was struck by a fish on takeoff in Tampa in what may be the first ever "fish strike".
