Travel Photography Tips, Basic Camera Maintenance and Preparation

One of many complications that inherently come with travel is the burden of keeping everything you bring safe, functional and undamaged. Cameras and equipment can be of particular concern, as you will want to have the ability to capture the adventure and take it home with you. In the following travel photography tips I’m going to share with you a few precautions that you can take to ensure the safety and functionality of the camera and equipment you bring along.

One thing I would like to stress upfront is that the time to get the gear and cameras you plan to travel with ready to go is well BEFORE you leave. Oftentimes, finding replacements parts, camera accessories and supplies can be difficult, expensive and time consuming.

This article is part of my growing list of holiday and travel photography tips and collection of articles you might find really helpful to get the best photos possible during your next trip...

Taking Pictures of Animals - Pet and Wildlife Photography Tips and Tricks

Do you like taking pictures of animals, your own pets or of the wildlife while you travel? Personally, I love the unpredictability that taking pictures of animals and wild creatures creates; they usually do not afford me the opportunity to manipulate or pose them in any sort of way in order to get the very best, or idealized shot possible. While everything usually goes out the window in terms of controlling your environment, lighting, angle, etc., there are still a few great tips to keep in mind before you try to get your shot.

Here are my favorite wildlife photography tips and tricks for taking pictures of animals…

Lionfish Hunting in Cozumel

While invasive lionfish are a terrible problem, we are excited that the word is getting out about the massive problem lionfish are causing in the Western Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Consequently, Cozumel has largely gotten the invasion under control but the island still needs our help to hunt lionfish and keep the damage they are doing to our underwater world to a minimum.

Will you help?

Scuba Diver Etiquette 101: Don't Pee in the Boat!

I’m sure we have all had at least one experience with “the smelly kid” in our lifetime. If you haven’t, then you probably are the smelly kid. Just sayin’. There is nothing that puts a damper on a dive trip like the overwhelming smell of fresh pee in a wetsuit. Wetsuits are designed to trap a thin layer of water inside so that your body can warm it up. Exiting the water without flushing the suit means you are wearing a thin layer of urine on the boat, and becomes more intense when you peel off your suit and it begins to bake in the warm Mexican Caribbean sunshine of Cozumel. The lasting stench of urine makes everyone eager to get away- whether that is underwater for dive #2 or back to the dock.

Here are some tips to keep you from raining on anyone’s parade:
