We've all seen the data supporting the fact that healthy, engaged employees perform better, are more productive and stay around longer. At the same time, benefit costs are increasingly tied to stress, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Companies are fighting back with free healthy lunches, nap rooms and open vacation policies – in addition to traditional interventions such as stretch breaks, biometric screening and weight management programs.

However, in the manufacturing sector, wellness needs are different from what's offered in a corporate office environment and these needs are often unique to each facility. It may be tempting to look for a new off-the-shelf wellness strategy in these environments, but the organizations that are most successful are those that concentrate on unique implementations rather than overall strategy. It was exactly ten years ago that STAPLES incorporated a 4,000 SF fitness facility into their new Home Office in Richmond Hill. Under David Burt’s leadership he was able to convince the Management Team to embrace the Bull Durham philosophy ... 'Build it and They Will Come'.

David is humble when it comes to accepting credit for the STAPLES Home Office gym and wellness program. "My leadership style is to lead by example,” he says. And David has truly done just that.

David has been a strong advocate of fitness and sport most of his life. Skiing, running, cycling and hockey have been favorite pastimes. When it comes to fitness, David’s accomplishments are many. He has completed a dozen marathons including the prestigious Boston Marathon.

Fernando Vescio has been promoting fitness and wellness in the workplace for over 30 years. In an earlier role in human resources at Ontario Hydro, Lakeview Generating Station, he converted a couple of trailers into a fitness centre to promote the BackFIT Program aimed at workers who were at risk of suffering lower back injuries. Pre-shift Stretch Breaks were also introduced to reduce the incidence of repetitive strain injuries. The program achieved immediate positive results in less sick leave usage and workers compensation claims by this targeted group of workers.

Living an active lifestyle has been part of Karen’s life since she was 25. She didn’t like the way her life was heading and decided it was time to do something about it. Spreading Happiness and shoebox at a time

Many thanks to each and every one of you who has contributed to the success of the 2015 Shoebox Project for Women in Shelters. We are in awe of the beautiful boxes we received and your success in engaging family, friends, clubs, organizations and companies to fill shoeboxes, donate products, contribute financially and of course knit headbands!

Collectively, we have delivered 2,400 shoeboxes to 19 shelters and outreach programs from Brantford to Toronto. Because of the generosity and compassion from many contributors Christmas will be brighter for many women.

Happy Holidays and all the best for 2016!
