For our friends in Toronto & Buffalo, New York!

Puerto Rican food trucks make debut in Buffalo!

The city’s first Puerto Rican food truck started dishing up pastelillos and papas fritas on Niagara Street last week.

Ricos Pinchos Place is run by a husband and wife team who started their career started selling coconut candy in Puerto Rico in 1996. In this country, Sarahi Alicea and her husband Hector Carrasquillo have been serving festivalgoers since 2013, Alicea said.

Their food truck has been in operation since June 8, often setting up on Niagara Street near Tops, between Maryland and Hudson streets, around noon, Tuesday through Saturday.

There’s rice with pork chops, chicken or beef, and nonalcoholic pina colada drinks. There’s also a selection of fried snacks, including pastelillos, or fried turnovers, papas fritas, baseball-sized mashed potato spheres stuffed with spiced meat and fried. Less often seen in Buffalo are alcapurrias, fritters made from green banana, and piononos, which are plantain pinwheels with beef or chicken.

Then a second: A second Puerto Rican food truck, Taste of Puerto Rico, has also hit the streets.

The truck, which was originally to be named Niagara Café Express, started selling June 13. Its menu includes yellow rice with pigeon peas, and pastelillos, or fried turnovers, in flavors including beef and cheese, chicken and cheese, pizza, and a dessert version with strawberries and cream cheese. Tostones, or plantain chips, are also available, along with limbers, which are frozen ice pops.

“We plan on being out several days during the week, including Thursdays in the Square,” said Anita Rodriguez, who owns the truck, along with her stepson Romelo Matos. As with any food truck, fans can check Facebook to find Taste of Puerto Rico’s location.

The Tres Palmas Inn was an answer to a prayer I had not even prayed yet. The views are so beautiful everywhere you look; the inn has about 18 rooms but they are separated enough where you feel like you have plenty of privacy. It was incredible to me that being in San Juan, the capitol of Puerto Rico, this inn is located on such a nice, quiet street with very little traffic. At first I was concerned about the lack of parking, but we found a space when we needed it every single time. The staff was so friendly and helpful that you feel like you are visiting friends. As a matter of fact, all the other guests were super friendly as well. It is definitely a happy place. It is also cozy, clean and modern plus literally, just a few short steps away, you have a very clean, quiet beach. My new favorite restaurant, La Cueva del Mar, is about a five-minute drive. The airport and many important attractions are also within a few minutes. We most definitely will visit Tres Palmas again, frequently!

On the beach, but to swim you might want to go down the street to the park. You are not in the Condado, so you'll need to cab ot there. However, a nice little neighborhood (Isla Verde) is about an 8 minute walk. There are several decent restaurants and even a surf shop. The hotel itself is alright...definitely budget accommodations. It can get noisy in the morning, but that is the nature of the layout of the building. Upstairs deck has a great view!

Quaint and peaceful. Not much for amenities but right on point for price. Quiet setting on the outskirts of town so if you want to be in the action, this is not for you. They have water sports rental including a snorkel gear and paddle boards. Several bikes are available first come first serve. There is a small adorable pool in the corner not great for swimming but nice just to cool off. A wonderful rooftop patio with a view of the three palms and a soothing hot tub overlooking the ocean.

Short distance to from the airport which was great! Service was very nice but the rooms weren't what I expected. The tiles were somewhat dirty and the water was freezing in the morning when showering. Breakfast was simple. My husband is a firefighter and was disappointed by the fact that there was no fire alarms in the rooms. Overall it was okay since we only needed it to sleep one night.

Everything I expected and more! Tres Palmas Inn was everything that I expected and more. From the moment I arrived I felt like I was visiting family. The staff that works in this place is very service oriented, they are eager to serve and help you, it is the kind of place that you feel like you are in somebody’s home other than I am in a Hotel. The views of the ocean from the terrace upstairs are breathtaking and the hot tub was the icing on the cake. I will definitely go back someday!

Highly recommended! Stayed here in January with some friends before a Cruise, we had a total of 4 rooms, they were all different, some bigger than others. This place is fantastic, the grounds are beautiful with many areas where you can seat and enjoy with your friends, sorry guys for all the re-arranging of the furniture every night. The ocean is right in front so you can hear the sound of the crashing waves all the time. There are many restaurants walking distance from the Hotel and they are about 20 minutes’ walk at a slow pace. The rooftop Jacuzzi was a blessing after a full day of hiking. The staff are courteous and professional, they will book your taxis, tours and even order food for you. The hotel is out of the tourist area in one of the oldest residential areas of San Juan so you will need to take a Bus or a taxi to go to Old San Juan, but can walk to Condado or Isla Verde. Highly recommended!
