"We now live in a culture of the Big Me, a culture of meritocracy where we promote ourselves and a social media culture where we broadcast highlight reels of our lives. What’s lost is the more balanced view, that we are splendidly endowed but also broken. And without that view, the whole logic of character-building falls apart."

+Jonathan Ramos yeah, broad jump skills probably aren't that useful in the defensive backfield. But maybe he could be an Olympian.

“Around 2006, the expansion of freedom and democracy in the world came to a prolonged halt. Since 2006, there has been no net expansion in the number of electoral democracies, which has oscillated between 114 and 119 (about 60 percent of the world’s states). ... The number of both electoral and liberal democracies began to decline after 2006 and then flattened out. Since 2006 the average level of freedom in the world has also deteriorated slightly.”

This is the best. This feels like authentic Barack Obama humor.  Sadly, year 6 of the administration is way too late for him to arrive.

"In Germany, American patriotism is often met with skepticism, befuddlement and disgust - but occasionally also a touch of jealousy, since World War II has made it impossible for the subsequent generations to be openly proud of their heritage."
As "American Sniper" divides US society, Germany is befuddled, as always, by the unbridled patriotism of their North American friends. Here, the military isn't a source of pride, and combat deaths aren't talked about.

"Mr. Stevenson’s organization, the Equal Justice Initiative, took a step in that direction on Tuesday when it released a report that chronicles nearly 4,000 lynchings of black people in 12 Southern states from 1877 to 1950. The report focuses on what it describes as “racial terror lynchings,” which were used to enforce Jim Crow laws and racial segregation. Victims in these cases were often murdered without being accused of actual crimes but for minor social transgressions that included talking back to whites or insisting on fairness and basic rights."

A new report aims to force Southern towns and the nation to confront an era of racial terror directly and recognize its ramifications today.

We have consulted Joseph on several occasions over the last few years to gain legal assistance on a full range of business law problems -- from understanding and crafting contract language and dealing with contract disputes to handling disagreements with vendors and even some help pursuing remedy for equipment theft. Needless to say, we could not be more pleased with his counsel and advice. Joe maintains a formidable legal repertoire and makes an elegant demonstration of his expertise, especially in contract law. His assistance with both writing and interpreting contracts has been invaluable to our business decision making. And his professional candor has saved us countless hours of wasteful wheel spinning. The insights, confidence and comfort you gain from working with a competent attorney like Joseph is priceless. Why lose any more sleep? Do yourself a favor and "call Joe."

My dad was drafted to serve in the military during the last few years of the Vietnam war. He was one of the lucky few who drew a card that sent him to Germany rather than the jungles of southeast Asia. What I got from this legacy was a handed down love for German culture, and an appreciation in particular for German food and beer. Nowhere in the Bay Area can you get a tastier glimpse of both than at Rita's German Deli, AKA Munchner Haus. I don't know for a fact, but suspect the lovely blonde woman we meet behind the counter is Frau Rita herself. She has been making the most amazing sandwiches and serving my family the best German treats since we moved to Fremont in 1989. My only complaint is that she no longer serves the pork roast sandwich. It was literally bliss served hot on a bun. But the remaining fare is all delicious. Take your time here. Dine in or grab a beer as you wait for your order to prep. Transport yourself for a minute to the German countryside. Life is good. Thank you, Munchner Haus!

I love this FedEx location. I come here 5 or 6 times a month to ship items and the staff is always helpful and very friendly. Linda is especially welcoming and after a few visits began to recognize me and the special needs I require for my items. Haters gonna hate, but pay them no mind. Trolling on the Interwebs comes much too easy to too many people.
