Ridge points are one of my favorite places to dive; it is possible to stay in that one place and let the marine life swim past you. Kind of like people watching at a busy city street intersection. Lighthouse Reef, Belize

The 3rd time in my life I've been "kissed" by a shark. This black-tip came at me from a distance like a wavy torpedo, and within inches of me (when this photo was taken) did a nearly instantaneous u-turn, hitting me with the side of his tail in my stomach. Glad my wet suit tastes bad...maybe it was Rachel Graham's tag (#334) which pissed him off. I've swam with 100's of black-tip reef sharks, first one to touch me...his world, not mine.

I'm sure your wet suit was fine. Cameras taste bad. All kidding aside, I rented a nikonos on a shark feed 20 years ago and they told me the sound of the flash charging up sometimes attracted the sharks. Any truth to this?

The peacock flounder starts off life drifting in the open ocean before settling on the bottom and carrying out an amazing metamorphosis. One side of their body migrates around to the other, so instead of left and right sides, they have top and bottom sides. Nature composes some of her loveliest music for the camera.

Sargassum.

"Where does it come from?" A friend asked.

"The open ocean" I replied.

" I know", he said "but where does it grow?".

"The open ocean".

"Strange" he said shaking his head.

"Strange and wonderful indeed" I said smiling. #Belize

Not a great sight to wake up to for miss lobster. Everyday marine life has to eat, and not be eaten; that is a powerful motivator to live in the moment. Lighthouse Reef, Belize

"Under the sea, under the sea
Darling it's better down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we're devoting full time to floating
Under the sea, ha ha..." #Belize

I've encountered hundreds of remoras over the years while diving. They occasionally get close; once one hit my head as if trying to hook up with me. But normally they are only a slight bother. Today a 3 foot remora, biggest I've seen in Belize, started circling me. I watched him/her for a while but soon lost interest and continued with my photography work. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain on my left middle finger; the remora was trying to bite it off! I swung my camera around and whopped it - he/ she left a nasty gash, but I saved my finger. Wonder if they nibble at turtle fins too...

When diving in Belize, we had a remora follow us the entire dive trying to attach itself to our tanks. He kept trying, one diver's tank after the other. I had felt sorry for him. He thought he had found a school of big fish. After this story, not so much.

Just back from a different kind of wilderness, where colorful buildings rise from the concrete, and rivers of 22 million people ebb and flow their way through life. Beautiful City and beautiful people, but how do they live in this jungle? #MexicoCity is only a short 1.5 hours flight from Chetumal, and so worth a visit, if only to wonder at what mankind is doing. #ILoveMexico

Tony Rath is a editorial and commercial photographer based in Dangriga Belize
Introduction
Tony Rath is a well published editorial and commercial photographer based along the shore of the Caribbean Sea in the picturesque village of Dangriga, Belize.

He was born somewhere, and then grew up. Along the way he canoed the Quetico, flew gliders in the USAF, became a marine biologist; worked as a technician, diver and underwater photographer for the Smithsonian Institution; worked underwater on oil rigs, missile launch sites and submersibles off the California Coast;  captained a sailboat across the Atlantic Ocean (twice) and through the Mediterranean and North Seas, commercial fished north of the Arctic Circle, lived in different cities and worked with different famous and important people.

Then he ended up in Belize in 1988. Since then he has explored and photographed most of Belize by land, sea and air. He has also photographed the countries in Central America and Mexico. He has won a bunch of important and impressive awards/contests for some of his work, and his clients include an eclectic group of discerning and talented editors, art directors, publications and companies.

He's really awesome, generally funny, some say easy to work with and really good with dogs, loves the outdoors and is always studying natural light.  Hire him, buy stock stills and footage from him, or ask him a question.  You can find him online at:
