“These findings will disappoint social critics who blame pop music for a generalised decline of culture,” Pagel said. “These results suggest there is no danger that musical styles have exhausted all of the possibilities or that we are in any danger of running out of new music.”
Computer analysis says new wavers like Duran Duran (pictured here), arena rockers like Van Halen and dance pop stars like Madonna marked a period of low di

Get the government out of our bedrooms!

I'm against government sanctioned gay marriage believe it or not...only because I'm against the government being involved in any relationship in the first place.  I'm against hetero "marriages" for the same reason.  If you want to devote your life to someone that should be between you and that person...and your lawyers if you choose.  Should the government decide who I can be best friends with next?!

Of all the arguments around gay marriage I still think this article from 2003 has the best solution, remove the government.

"If marriage were an entirely private affair, all the disputes over gay marriage would become irrelevant. Gay marriage would not have the official sanction of government, but neither would straight marriage. There would be official equality between the two, which is the essence of what gays want and are entitled to. And if the other side is sincere in saying that its concern is not what people do in private, but government endorsement of a gay "lifestyle" or "agenda," that problem goes away, too."

+Debra Cleaver Huffington Post had an article from a historian explaining the real reason and it was simpler than that. It was because men were being left by their wives and they needed government involvement to force them to stay at home and have a record so that women wouldn't end up with too many husbands. Ha. Men...

Satire folks but very hard hitting!
Just a heads-up: This is satire. This. Is. Satire. But that's why it's so freaking good.

* Competition will force them to lower prices.

* Employment (full employment) hasn't picked up due to a host of reasons: the ACA, Dodd-Frank, automation, labor shipped off-shore to cheaper labor countries, general fear of future business conditions, etc....

* You make a great point about the self employed. Not sure how that would fall-out. The solution is to abolish the income tax altogether and go with a national sales tax. In other words, the only time you're taxed is when you spend. You could (should) eliminate this tax on food and shelter so as to not hurt the poor.

* On your second reply, even though there were fewer loop holes back in the day, that doesn't mean that those taxes weren't still being pushed off onto the consumer in the form of higher prices on goods. After WWII the USA was basically the only game in town. The gov't could get away with charging higher effective tax rates. But as Europe and Japan recovered, and third-world countries began emerging, the pressure has been on to lower corp taxes in order to keep America competitive.

Well, I've said my piece. I won't be able to reply again until tomorrow anyway. Next time I check this I'll be drunk and incoherent....

Shall we then abandon all hope of a paradisiacal state? No. Paradise is here. It is now. It is within us and without us. It is in our thoughts and in our actions. It is in our lives and in our loves. It is in our families and in our friends. It is in our communities and in our world. It is in the courage of our convictions and in the character of our souls.
Hope springs eternal, even if life is not.

"I don't think myself that we're seeing a resurgence of religion, I think we're seeing a turning up of the volume mightily by the religious, which is something different. It may very well be a sympton of the fact that religion feels so under pressure that it's doing what it did back in the 16th century at the time of the Reformation when Catholicism, which had been the single dominent outlook, became very vigorous in its demise. These were death throes that caused those awful wars in the 16th and 17th centuries because they were losing their power and struggling to keep it."

It often seems as though religion is bigger than ever, being at the root of so many of the world's conflicts, but philosopher and author of Against All Gods Anthony Grayling thinks this is paradoxically a sign that it is in its 'death throes'.

Excellent food and even better service. It's a very cozy place that is perfect for reading while enjoying a drink. The smoked salmon in the Lox and Eggs is out of this world.
