Introduction
I'm a photographer living on the Colorado Plateau in the American Southwest.  My website shows images from the surrounding area.  I really love sandstone--its colors, shapes, textures, and glow--and many of my images are different takes on this theme.  I also like the creative aspects that Photoshop brings to photography, and have posted a number of tutorials describing techniques that I use in developing my images.

This is an image of sandstone. I always like it when I find areas that have these varied hues. The colors here are a combination of the natural color in the stone, light reflected from a nearby mesa, and a clear blue sky overhead. Information on the Photoshopping for this image is found on a new entry in my blog: http://tonykuyper.wordpress.com/2011/12/02/listening-to-the-light-examples-in-image-development-part-2/

This is an image of sandstone taken in post-sunset light where the glow in the western sky was illuminating the scene. I'm looking down on the this scene, even though there is a sense, I think, that you could walk horizontally across this. I discuss some of the Photoshop layers used to develop this image in a recent blog post: http://tonykuyper.wordpress.com/2011/11/18/listening-to-the-light-examples-in-image-development/

16-bit luminosity masks are possible via the calculations method, but are they better than 8-bit masks? This post looks at some theoretical situations where 16-bit masks appear to work better and then investigates whether these theoretical advantages…

Mark Rupert has posted a blog on several resources, including mine, for luminosity masks.
I’ve been learning more about luminance (or luminosity) masking, and wanted to share some tutorials I have found useful. What’s so powerful about these techniques is that they allow you to make precise selections and masks, a...

While it's relatively new, WhyTake.net is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to view nature photography. Large images, clean layout, and some truly excellent photographs. Click the EXPLORE link at the top and enjoy!

I found this site a month ago Tony and i got blown away with the quality of nature's vision through many creative photographers over there. I love how they only accept nature and landscape and totally refuse any man-made structure within the shot.

Sean Bashaw posted an image from Valley of Fire that I really like (sandstone). He has an excellent eye for composition and this one is really unique in its play of colors.
Sean Bagshaw originally shared:

Finally getting my feet back under me a bit. There is nothing better to me than spending time out in the world exploring and taking photographs, but I'm finding it takes me longer and longer to dig out from the desk work that backs up while I'm gone. Throw in a family holiday and trying to sell/buy a house...you get the picture.

Valley of Fire in Nevada holds some amazing sandstone treasures. This is a small formation found in a wash while exploring with +Tony Kuyper last month. Tony is the master at these types of tight stone abstracts (thanks for the suggestions on this by the way Tony). I have a ways to go, but I certainly understand his fascination with the colors and shapes one can find in desert stone. This array of colors existed in the rock and the light, but I have done some fairly extensive developing to increase contrast and bring them out. Tony's luminosity masks and luminosity painting techniques were critical.

It's nice to be sharing new images again. Many more to come.
