If you're a Google Cloud Platform user with an iPhone, listen up! The Google Cloud Console app for iOS just launched on the App Store. You can get push notifications about incidents from Google Cloud Monitoring, start/stop VMs, create a handy dashboard to monitor your resource usage, and other useful stuff.

We're still in the early stages and have a lot more good stuff to add, so please send us feedback—knowing what users want to do helps drive our work. Go check it out!

:takes off day-job hat for a moment:

In my free time I tinker with iOS development, and was really excited about Swift. It's been a blast working with it and seeing its potential, and I took the opportunity with iOS 8 to write a custom keyboard extension in Swift that makes my life easier.

I find myself often wanting to type a character that's not easily accessible through the standard keyboard: a mathematical symbol, some punctuation, or a foreign letter. Usually I go to my browser, search for it, find it on a web page somewhere, finesse the selection to copy just that character, and then go back to the other app and paste it. Huge pain in the butt.

This custom keyboard lets me easily access these advanced Unicode characters, either through some pre-configured category keypads or by typing in a keyword (based on the character's Unicode name) and searching for it.

If you're on iOS 8, go take a look!

XE21 is on its way to your Glass as you read this, and we've got some great new APIs and developer features for you: new card layouts, a whole slew of voice commands, advanced developer settings, and more! Check out the link for all the details.

Strong design is at the very core of great Glassware. We know that creating a total user experience that delivers exactly what a user needs when he or she needs it is not as easy as it may seem. So, we have created the Glassware Flow Designer tool to help you design your ideal flow and lay out the best user experience before diving too deep into your coding.

We built this tool specifically for Glass using common design patterns and layouts to help you design your Glassware. Your flows are stored on Google Drive, where you can share them with colleagues, comment on them, and even edit them collaboratively. We have been using this tool and process internally and we are very excited to make this beta available to you. Here’s to great design and even more great Glassware!

Moar CSS for moar better timeline items!
Mirror API folks, would you like some moar templates to choose from?

+Tony Allevato just updated the Mirror API Playground. There's now an author template, and markup to make mosaic images super easy.

A good number of you have downloaded the first GDK Glassware that was released as part of the Sneak Peek, and that includes the Compass. I wanted to make sure that everybody knew about an added bonus that we snuck in there!

The Glass team has hidden 233 of their favorite historical points of interest, natural landmarks, and quirky attractions from all over the United States inside the compass. If you’re looking at it while you're within ten kilometers of one of these locations, its direction and distance will be shown to you. Go exploring and capture vignettes of the places you find so you can share them with the rest of the community!

Here's one of them, just to give you a little tease. Only 232 more to go!

Say hello to the GDK!
Developers have started building great Glassware with the Mirror API and today will have even broader access to Glass with a Sneak Peek of the Glass Development Kit.  Here's a recording of the announcement earlier today in our San Francisco Basecamp.

You can download the library and learn more about the GDK here: https://developers.google.com/glass/

The full GDK Developer Preview will be available in the coming weeks.  We can’t wait to start working on this next chapter of Glass Development with you.

It's that time again!
Share it, watch it, hear it, host it

It’s that time of the month again. We have three new features on Glass that we’re really proud of, plus an experimental feature you’ve been asking about.

Vignettes

Glass now has a whole new way to tell stories through pictures. You can capture both a photo and whatever was on your display in that moment. All you need to do is tap and select “Make vignette” after you take a picture. Our team has been having a blast with this feature (as you can see below).

YouTube videos in search results

You’ll now see YouTube results for some searches. For example, imagine your bike tire’s just gone flat. Walk it home? Nope. Now, you can find and watch a quick YouTube video on how to fix it in a flash. Just tap to play and pause, swipe forward to fast forward and backward to rewind.

Sound search

This does exactly what it says on the tin. You’re wearing Glass (obvs), you hear a song you like and you want to know what it is. Now all you have to do is long press on the touchpad, swipe forward and whoomp (there it is). Alternatively, you can long press on the touchpad and simply ask “What song is this?”

Glass with Google Apps accounts

You asked, we listened, we toiled and now we are building and testing Glass with Google Apps accounts. Some services, like email, are working already. Feel free to try it out by factory resetting your Glass, and signing in with your Google Apps account.

Hey Explorers – got questions about XE9? Ask the Glass Team on 9/13

Explorers, we know you’ve got lots of questions. Whether you’re curious about how we built this month's updates, that mysterious PUPPIES_IN_PJS lab you found in our code, or what we had for lunch, we’ll be fielding your questions in the Explorers Community this Friday (9/13). We’ll also have a virtual “Glassroom” hangout where you can catch up on what you’ve missed and get help from Glass Guides. Stay tuned for more details later this week.

My teammates beat me to it already — but here's a new APK example for Google Glass that shows off a fun audio visualization!
+Tony Allevato strikes again, this time with another sample of APK code targeted at Google Glass.

As always, happy hacking :)
