January is #Glaucoma Awareness Month - Team Diaton Supports the Mission to Detect Glaucoma and Prevent Blindness

Team Diaton tonometer and BiCOM Inc supports January Glaucoma Awareness Month. Over 3 million Americans, and over 60 million people worldwide, have glaucoma. Experts estimate that half of them don’t know they have it. Combined with our aging population, we can see an epidemic of blindness looming if we don’t raise awareness about the importance of regular eye examinations to preserve vision. The World Health Organization estimates that 4.5 million people worldwide are blind due to glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the United States. People are often unaware that glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages.

If detected early, before noticeable vision loss occurs, glaucoma can usually be controlled and severe vision loss can often be prevented. Vision that is lost from glaucoma cannot be restored.

Anyone can get glaucoma, but those at higher risk include:

African Americans over age 40
Everyone over age 50, especially Hispanics/Latinos
People with a family history of the disease
In a study published by the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the number of people with glaucoma worldwide is expected to be 79.6 million by 2020 and 111.8 million by 2040.

BiCOM Inc., and Team Diaton Tonometer participates in a local and global health screening event with free glaucoma screenings. It is imperative to get regular eye pressure (IOP) screenings from your eye doctor. Vision loss caused by Glaucoma can be slowed or halted with the proper medication.

Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc., stated – “Getting an eye pressure screening has never been easier or safer with painless through the eyelid Tonometer Diaton.  Many in need were screened and some with elevated intraocular pressures were referred to ophthalmologists for further evaluation. We’re glad that our unique transpalpebral and transscleral tonometry technology allows for a quick, painless and efficient way to screen many at risk independent of corneal biomechanics and provide more accurate IOP results.”

DIATON Tonometers Unique Transpalpebral Tonometry Capabilities Revealed at ASCRS ASOA Congress in San Diego to 1000's of Eye Doctors

Unique Transpalpebral Diaton tonometer, IOP through EYELID, featured at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, ASCRS / ASOA 2015. Diaton tonometer is the world’s only Non-corneal and Non-contact tonometer used through the eyelid to quickly and painlessly screen for intraocular pressure for glaucoma without directly touching the cornea or requiring use of topical anesthesia. Diaton tonometry demo and training sessions available at Sonomed Exhibit #2745

SAN DIEGO, CA - Diaton tonometer is particularly useful in cases where standard direct applanation (corneal) tonometry is difficult or not viable, such as with pediatric patients, in presence of certain corneal pathology, edema, infection, following corneal surgery, KPro and in cases of eye trauma.

Emil W. Chynn, MD, FASC from Park Avenue LASEK stated, – “As a Cornea-Refractive trained specialist, I encounter many situations where Goldmann readings are inherently inaccurate–like post-LASIK, in cases of corneal edema, scarring, post-keratoprosthesis or transplant. In such cases, it’s both invaluable and reassuring to have the Diaton device available to measure IOP that’s independent of corneal pathology”

"It works," said Dr. Mark Latina, glaucoma specialist and the inventor of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), after revealing results of the study titled: "Accuracy of Transpalpebral Tonometer Diaton Compared to Goldmann Applanation Tonometer in Normal and Glaucomatous Eyes"

Additional Clinical Trials Show that Diaton tonometer is Irreplaceable:
• Diaton Tonometer use in Boston KPro Type 1. Clinical Study from University of Illinois at Chicago:Agreement among Transpalpebral,Transcleral and Tactile Intraocular Pressure Measurements in Eyes with Type 1 Boston Keratoprosthesis
• Diaton tonometer in Keratoconus study: Tonometric Values of Intraocular Pressure, Using the Goldmann Tonometer, Tonopen and Diaton Transpalpebral Tonometer in Keratoconus
• Clinical Comparison of 3 tonometers: Comparative Agreement Among Three Methods of Tonometry: Goldmann Applanation, Transpalpebral and Dynamic Contour
• Diaton tonometer use post LASIK: Diaton tonometer for intraocular pressure measurements after laser in situ keratomileusis

The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is an international, educational society with more than 9,000 members. Its mission is to advance the art and science of ophthalmic surgery and the knowledge and skills of ophthalmic surgeons by providing clinical and practice management education and by working with patients, government, and the medical community to promote the delivery and advancement of high-quality eye care.

Major Benefits of Diaton Tonometer: No contact with the cornea (only upper eyelid) No anesthesia drops No risk of infecting or scratching cornea No consumables (no need to purchase replacement tips/covers..etc.,) No sterilization No pachymetry needed (no need to adjust for CCT or other corneal parameters) No daily calibration needed (easy tonometer maintenance) Handheld / Portable + Easy to use

Glaucoma preventive screenings are becoming a standard in most countries. Primary care providers, Family doctors & General physicians are adding new medical devices which allow quick, non-invasive and painless ways to detect glaucoma in early stages. Devices such as DIATON tonometer, aka Glaucoma Eye Test http://www.GlaucomaEyeTest.com, allows for the measure of intraocular pressure (IOP) through the upper eyelid without contact with eyeball or need for eye drops.
Since glaucoma, the silent thief of sight, is not curable yet, early detection is the only way to prevent irreversible blindness in children and adults.

Today, as aging populations worldwide are growing at a staggering rate, limited numbers of eyecare professionals are not sufficient to conduct early detection of glaucoma on a mass scale.

Primary, Family and General Physicians being on the forefront of an overall health evaluation have an ability today to help the cause and conduct quick glaucoma screenings in an office setting as step one and refer patients determined to be at risk for a further, more comprehensive evaluation with an eye care professional.

In a study published by the British Journal of Ophthalmology, the number of people with glaucoma worldwide is expected to be 79.6 million by 2020 and 111.8 million by 2040.

The latest Glaucoma IOP Eye Test THROUGH THE EYELID technology by BiCOM Inc. with DIATON tonometer enables any healthcare professional to quickly and painlessly determine elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) THROUGH THE EYELID and take preventive measures or determine treatment plans to save eyesight.

Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc., stated – "We're extremely proud of our R&D and clinical team that have developed the Diaton, easy-to-use glaucoma detecting technology through the eyelid. This unique device now enables healthcare professionals in over 60 countries to save sight of many…"

DIATON is currently being used by Inpatient & Outpatient Clinics such as Hospitals, Emergency Rooms, Nursing & Elderly Homes, General & Specialty Practitioners as well as Ophthalmologists and Optometrists.  Diaton tonometer is also a vital part of many medical screening missions conducted in less developed communities around the world.
