Summer 2016 Highlights

Summer was dedicated to clearing out the house that Katie and I have lived in for 21 years. This included recycling, selling, giving away, and throwing away lots of stuff that has cluttered our lives for many years. Everything else had to fit in our truck and trailer or be stored somewhere. We also had a lot of work done on the house so that it would be rentable. Given all of that, not a lot of time was left for photography. Even so, I was able to find some nice shots.

Winter Highlights 2015 / 2016

Nov 20, 2015 - Feb 9, 2016

I am noticing definite changes outside: I see blossoms on my plum tree, I hear wrens singing in the yard and hummingbirds swooping past my head. I think it is time to call it: Winter is over. Time to put up my Winter Highlights album and start looking for spring birds beginning to nest and hang out in flowers.

This winter was spent relatively close to home with trips north into the Skagit Flats and south to Nisqually. It wouldn't be a Pacific Northwest winter album without a bunch of short-eared owls, so you will see plenty of them. But I didn't ignore our forest, shore, or water birds, many of which were found at my local haunt of Discovery Park.

A bit late, but still worth sharing...

Read about Tourette Syndrome from a 13 year old who deals with it on a daily basis.  She is my wife's nephew's daughter and a beautiful person.
This gorgeous girl faces a serious challenge as she walks out the door every day.  She has Tourette Syndrome, with all of the complications of anxiety and ADD that the Syndrome promises.  Most people don't know, because she takes it like a champ.  In fact, if you didn't know better, it would be…

Winter Highlights 2014/2015

Dec 21, 2014 - March 20, 2015

Winter was very mild this year in the Pacific Northwest. It actually felt like spring started in late January. Early on, I had the opportunity to spend time with one of my favorite winter birds, the short-eared owl, as well as a few other special winter owls that I don't get to see regularly. At the first hint of spring, I was fortunate to find an Anna's hummingbird nest and spent many hours watching nest building and nestling feeding. I was even able to find the newly-fledged youngster the day it left the nest.

Spring Highlights 2016
Feb 18, 2016 - Jun 17, 2016

This year has been extremely busy for Katie and I as we prepare for the "Next Big Thing®." (See http://eepurl.com/b5t6PD for details). Because of that, my excursions with the camera have been curtailed quite a bit, but I tried to get out to Discovery Park on every sunny morning I could manage. If anything, just to preserve my sanity.

Luckily, I was still able to find critters to photograph and below are highlights for this spring.

Summer / Fall 2015 Highlights

June 21, 2015 - Nov 5, 2015

Highlights this time around include the usual haunts like Discovery Park and Nine Mile Falls as well as road trips to the Oregon Coast and SW Colorado. We visited the Oregon Dunes where snowy plover nesting grounds are being protected and Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake where you can see large flocks of fall migrants such as American avocets, red-necked phalaropes, northern shovelers, eared grebes, etc... Oh, and one of the few remaining herds of American bison.

Anna's Hummingbird Nests 2015

A collection of video and stills combined with ambient sound that are a meditation on two Anna's hummingbird nests found in Discovery Park, Seattle, WA.

Part I: On the Edge of Civilization

An Anna's hummingbird nest is found on Feb 8, 2015 next to the hustle and bustle of human civilization.  The nest is just being completed. Sixteen days later, a single nestling is seen and is raised until it fledges...

Part II: Reluctant Sibling

A second nest with two siblings is found Apr 3, 2015. After much practice, the elder sibling leaves the nest on the second day only to return by the end of the day. On the third day, after repeated prompting by the elder, the younger sibling eventually fledges...

Fall Highlights 2014

Selections from Washington State and a bit of southern British Columbia, Canada make up my Fall Highlights album for 2014.  Trips to Ocean Shores, WA and Delta, BC provided great looks at shorebirds, water birds, and wading birds. Local Seattle parks and natural areas, not to mention my own backyard, provided nice looks at regular denizens.

All in all, it was a Fall full of birds… A great thing in my book.

Enjoy!

Story
Tagline
Aspiring member of the avian paparazzi.
Introduction
Since 2006 I have been slowly discovering the natural world around me through photography. Between August 2011 and August 2012 I was able to explore at a deeper level by taking a sabbatical from my regular work. I travelled from Northern California to Homer, Alaska exploring places that I had never seen or spending extended time in places I already knew. It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I continue to explore and photograph birds and nature as I move into another life phase.

A table of contents of my sabbatical posts can be found here: Sabbatical Table of Contents

A beautiful space for aspiring artists or photographers to display their work. The lighting is great including a lot of natural light. Plenty of space for groups to view the works. It is a little off the beaten path, so some self promotion is required, but the price is right. Definitely recommended.
