Winter Highlights 2016 / 2017

Now that Summer is here...oh right, some people reading this are just starting to get a hint of Spring. It is still March, so I guess that is technically true, but the 90-degree temperatures here in Arizona feels a lot more like August to us.

Luckily, our last three months have taken us into the Mojave Desert, through Southeast California (Joshua Tree National Park and the Salton Sea), and into Southern Arizona (Cibola National Wildlife Refuge, Organ Pipe National Monument, Tucson Mountain Park, and Patagonia Lake). The warm days, with occasional freezing temperatures at night, have helped acclimatize us to the weather.

So, for those that are tired of the wind, rain, and snow, here is a bit of what you can look forward to in the coming months.

Summer 2016 Highlights

Summer was dedicated to clearing out the house that Katie and I have lived in for 21 years. This included recycling, selling, giving away, and throwing away lots of stuff that has cluttered our lives for many years. Everything else had to fit in our truck and trailer or be stored somewhere. We also had a lot of work done on the house so that it would be rentable. Given all of that, not a lot of time was left for photography. Even so, I was able to find some nice shots.

Spring Highlights 2016
Feb 18, 2016 - Jun 17, 2016

This year has been extremely busy for Katie and I as we prepare for the "Next Big Thing®." (See http://eepurl.com/b5t6PD for details). Because of that, my excursions with the camera have been curtailed quite a bit, but I tried to get out to Discovery Park on every sunny morning I could manage. If anything, just to preserve my sanity.

Luckily, I was still able to find critters to photograph and below are highlights for this spring.

Winter Highlights 2015 / 2016

Nov 20, 2015 - Feb 9, 2016

I am noticing definite changes outside: I see blossoms on my plum tree, I hear wrens singing in the yard and hummingbirds swooping past my head. I think it is time to call it: Winter is over. Time to put up my Winter Highlights album and start looking for spring birds beginning to nest and hang out in flowers.

This winter was spent relatively close to home with trips north into the Skagit Flats and south to Nisqually. It wouldn't be a Pacific Northwest winter album without a bunch of short-eared owls, so you will see plenty of them. But I didn't ignore our forest, shore, or water birds, many of which were found at my local haunt of Discovery Park.

Summer / Fall 2015 Highlights

June 21, 2015 - Nov 5, 2015

Highlights this time around include the usual haunts like Discovery Park and Nine Mile Falls as well as road trips to the Oregon Coast and SW Colorado. We visited the Oregon Dunes where snowy plover nesting grounds are being protected and Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake where you can see large flocks of fall migrants such as American avocets, red-necked phalaropes, northern shovelers, eared grebes, etc... Oh, and one of the few remaining herds of American bison.

A bit late, but still worth sharing...

Read about Tourette Syndrome from a 13 year old who deals with it on a daily basis.  She is my wife's nephew's daughter and a beautiful person.
