Fedora 20 is out., it's bloated, and it's all GNOME SHELL's fault. I wonder if it's noticeably slower on a decent PC. I'm not trying it though; I'm switching over to Debian 7 with LXDE desktop.

It's out there but mostly on servers, firewalls, etc. It's harder to find drivers and binary packages because it never really caught on as a desktop OS. Chicken/egg problem.

It's still Unix so it's not exactly a huge improvement over Linux.

Sea Battle! Rough demo, but as of today it's finally playable. HTML5, works in most browsers, best in Chrome as usual.

I watched some GTA5 walkthroughs to see what that's all about. I see why it cost $500 million to make, and paid for itself in day one sales... it's that impressive... visuals, framerate, voiceovers, storylines. Totally unrealistic of course (except for the map, visuals, corruption...) but it's still just as awkward to navigate a 3D world as it was 15 years ago so they let you cheat to make it fun. And it's still got unfun parts. I find it encouraging that even this game can't do some things that a 2D indie game could do.

Wow... nice photography by Jon Liles, the programmer behind the increasingly awesome 'Non' suite of modular Linux Audio software.

This Is How I Hang

I don’t always sleep in the woods, but when I do, I do it like this:

Yeah, but everyone else wants Wordpress. Hmm.. at high load, I get similar performance from apache and nginx (with PHP hosted by FPM). Not that I'm looking closely...

If anything will convince Congress to curtail the NSA, it's the "we're losing business to other countries" argument.

Anyone else think it's backwards to teach kids to program starting with practical modern languages? I'm just reminiscing about what a bitch it was for me to learn C after Basic and Pascal, without learning Assembly. In hindsight, I would have liked to learn how computers work ASAP... in something like this order:
- Basic (with line numbers)
- intro to machine code and Assembler
- lots of Forth
- Scheme, Javascript, plain C (for study and practical work)
- then finally some higher-level industrial & academic crap
