Shortly before he died, Stan Laurel reportedly told his nurse that he’d rather be skiing. When she expressed surprise Laurel was a skier, he replied: “I’m not. But I’d rather be doing that than this!”

Now, 50 years after his death, a special event is being held on Tyneside to celebrate Laurel’s comedy genius and his little-known lifelong connection with the region.
The comedian Stan Laurel saw himself as a geordie after growing up in north-east England. Now his home town is celebrating his life with a new play

"This will transform the museum's Grade II listed Second World War Wellington Hangar into the Brooklands Aircraft Factory, restore the finishing straight of the race track, which was the world's first purpose-built motor racing circuit, and build a new annexe, the Flight Shed, to house more of the museum's collection of historic aircraft."
Brooklands Museum has been awarded funding for a huge redevelopment of its racetrack and aircraft hangar

'Ukip: The First 100 Days' Imagines Nigel Farage As Prime Minister And It's Terrifying

A Ukip government would lead to riots in the streets and the loss of millions of jobs after the UK leaves the EU, according to Channel 4 docudrama screening tomorrow.

Ukip: The First 100 Days mixes archive footage with scripted scenes featuring actress Priyanga Burford playing the part of the party's only Asian woman MP.

Her character, elected for Romford in an imagined landslide that puts Nigel Farage in Number 10, is left grappling with her conscience as the new government brings in tough anti-immigration raids and withdraws from Brussels.

Giving evidence to the Commons liaison committee, Cameron said: “We are not at the stage of supplying lethal equipment. We have announced a whole series of non-lethal equipment, night-vision goggles, body armour, which we have already said that we will give to Ukraine.

“Over the course of the next month we are going to be deploying British service personnel to provide advice and a range of training, from tactical intelligence to logistics to medical care, which is something else they have asked for.

“We will also be developing an infantry training programme with Ukraine to improve the durability of their forces. This will involve a number of British service personnel; they will be away from the area of conflict but I think this is the sort of thing we should be helping with.”
Prime minister says service personnel to provide infantry training as well as advice on logistics, medical care and tactical intelligence

From the end of next year a change in EU policy will likely force these cane farmers and hundreds of thousands like them across Jamaica and beyond out of traditional work and into subsistence poverty.

The change is the end to the existing cap on European sugar beet production, which will flood a sugar market already, in anticipation, experiencing historic low prices.

Under fierce lobbying pressure from multinational sugar processors – Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Mars – the EU argues that the reform is made in the spirit of freer markets and better value for the European shopper.
Europe will soon allow its states to grow more sugar beet, which will devastate economies in the Caribbean, and a trade that underpinned the British empire

The chairman of the Commons defence committee, Rory Stewart, sounded a warning that the UK was facing a “genuinely dangerous situation” with Russia. He told BBC Radio 4’s The World at One that there was now a “razor edge which western policy makers need to walk”, and to do nothing could lead to as much violence as taking action.

“If they do nothing, Putin, who is a real opportunist, will be encouraged to push his luck and see if he can humiliate Nato,” he said. “If on the other hand we do too much, we could risk provoking an overreaction.”

“The government has been caught red-handed. The security agencies have been illegally intercepting privileged material and are continuing to do so – this could mean they’ve been spying on the very people challenging them in court.

“This is the second time in as many weeks that government spies have been rumbled breaking the law.”
Intelligence agencies have been monitoring conversations between lawyers and their clients for past five years, government admits
