But Joe Peduzzi had no idea how far his tolerance would be stretched. The 22-year-old found that the double room in east London he had expected to view was in fact a mattress in a shed in the corner of a communal living room.

The room in Bethnal Green, advertised on SpareRoom.co.uk for £480-a-month plus bills, had been described as “the biggest in the house”, with the only indication of its downside being that it “comes with a sofa which means sharing it with the rest of us sometimes”.

The UN's newly appointed special rapporteur on privacy, Joseph Cannataci, has described digital surveillance in the UK as "worse" than anything imagined in George Orwell's totalitarian dystopia 1984.

Speaking to the Guardian, Cannataci -- who doesn't own a Facebook account or use Twitter -- lambasted the oversight of British digital surveillance as "a rather bad joke at its citizens' expense".

"Like a macabre inversion of Disneyland, you can wander past a fire-ravaged fairytale castle, stare at a Cinderella pumpkin carriage crash and share a trip on the dodgems with the Grim Reaper."

Fascinating little series, interesting how the British teachers were so resistant to doing a longer day and the chinese teachers were so adamant that was the reason for success along with a 'don't try just do' philosophy  - Highly recommended if you had not managed to catch it
It is exam week. Which system will triumph, the Chinese or the British?

"....based on secret discussions that he had at the time with two journalists in which he alleges that the British intelligence services had made his position as prime minister untenable and that Britain was on the brink of a military coup, with Lord Mountbatten, the Queen's cousin, lined up to head an interim government after Wilson had been deposed"

The Department for Work and Pensions has admitted making up comments from supposed, "benefit claimants" that appeared in a leaflet about sanctions. The quotes were made up and the photos came from stock characters. They were unreal.

In March this year Parliament's Work and Pensions Select Committee said there was evidence that sanctions were geared towards punishing people for being unemployed and might not actually help them find work.

The MPs said there was evidence that the benefit cuts for unemployed people caused more problems than they solved and might be "purely punitive".

This has caused outrage and there is now a petition calling for the resignation of the Secretary for Sate Iain Duncan Smith.

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said: “The case studies were used for illustrative purposes to help people understand how the benefit system works. They’re based on conversations our staff have had with claimants. They have now been removed to avoid confusion.”

I think that is Civil Servant double speak for saying “we got it wrong folks!” When Governments of all colours produce dodgy documents and fabricated leaflets then it is little wonder that there is a disconnection between people and politicians. It should always be the job of politicians to put this right and not defend it.

Romans aghast at revelations of official corruption tied to the mafia found new reason for outrage after the Hollywood-style funeral of a purported local crime boss – replete with a gilded horse-drawn carriage, flower petals tossed from a helicopter and the theme music from The Godfather playing outside the church.

On Thursday several commentators noted the irony that a reported mob boss was allowed an elaborate funeral at the church while the Archdiocese of Rome refused to allow a funeral at the same church in 2006 for Piergiorgio Welby, then the symbol of Italy’s right-to-die movement.
