Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy was one of the most important works of Philosophy in the Middle Ages. As a Medievalist, Tolkien of course knew it quite well, and I believe we can see him drawing on it here with great effect.

For Boethius and the Middle Ages in general, C.S. Lewis' The Discarded Image is still an excellent introduction.

While my boss is out recovering from rotator cuff surgery, I have volunteered to run my store's social media. So I'm tweeting from @BNLakeGrove I'm instagramming from bnlakegrove, and will soon be facebooking from Barnes & Noble (Lake Grove, NY).
