Fascinating piece—well, um, yes, I did write it—on how front-of-book (FOB) magazine articles can be a dandy way to make some dough.

Oh, the humanity! – Pinky DeVroom, blasted in an old Boston bar, as the Crash of ’29 splinters the world.

For a mere .99, you get a besotted novelist who crashes his love life, as the stock market crashes too. A lovely compilation of Hell and handbaskets (and some handwringing. And jokes. Don't forget the jokes).

[The weird thing is that the image here is not the cover of the story. The actual cover is WAY better. WTF, Amazon?]

There is something oddly soothing about watching this guy cleverly place, position and fold these clothes for long, extended trips. (Maybe because my bag looks like zombies ate half the contents in their search for brains—of which there were none.)

Many writers, particularly younger ones, struggle to find their voice: the word choice, the cadence, the tone, the very punctuation—the stuff that slyly suggests or that screams that you wrote it. Well, just how do you find that durn thing called voice?

My Forbes piece on craft distilling and what it takes to develop expertise in the discipline. Complex and difficult research: I had to go to both distilleries and do some tastings. As the cliché goes, somebody had to do it...
Distilling artisanal spirits is as much a matter of art as it is deep expertise. Inspirations for craft liquors might come on the road less traveled.

Man, I feel ashamed I still watch TV: here's Betty Reid Soskin, longtime blogger, civil-rights activist and at 93, the oldest full-time ranger in the national park service. Oh, she gives speeches too.

My American Scholar piece here is too short to do her justice, so I'm looking for a venue that accommodates a deeper interview. Betty's deep.

A lifelong adventure photographer goes from film to digital to video (and a million photographs in between) — my Forbes piece on his life behind the lens.
Outdoor photographer Kennan Ward has been taking photographs in the wild for more than 40 years, and more than 30 of those professionally. Ward is working on his next million photographs.

Yes, Kennan's thoughts there could be useful for any artist trying to communicate. He's an interesting fellow—I've known him for a long time (and even wrote the captions on the backs of his notecards in the 80s).

Finally got this animal off my computer and into the world. It is high-calorie but low fat, loves children and will never hog the remote.

Expectations: tricky devils. What is now surely might not be forever, but our minds sometimes make it out that way. Bad for us, but perhaps a useful tactic to take in story and character design.
You know that feeling while walking when you come to an unseen or unanticipated step or curb, and your foot, rather than landing on the expected solid ground going forward, instead free-falls downw...

Story
Tagline
Freeing words from the bondage of linear coddling. Or something like that.
Introduction
I love language, both its nuances and its broad strokes. I'm good at scrambling it, setting it up in tight lines, and tilting it toward windmills and other fanciful targets. I can also deliver it hard, fast and straight, if that's what it takes.

Check out The Write Word - http://www.tombentley.com - it's the writing and editing business I’ve run out of my house for more than 10 years. There you can see my writing and editing services and a sampling of the hundreds of  freelance pieces I've published—ranging from first-person essays to travel pieces to more journalistic subjects—in newspapers, magazines, and online.

My short story collection, Flowering and Other Stories, was published by AuthorMike Ink. It's available in print and as an ebook. Check out its info page here:

My novel, All Roads Are Circles, is available as an electronic download on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006L3G590
