In this special guest GLP Riff, Chris Guillebaeu talks about the up side of throwing in the towel and how it can often lead to something so much better.

Not only do you get to read some very clear, very concise language on why you shouldn't use "very" (and its variants) in your writing, but you get to see a shot of me from the days when I carried my lunch in my hair. Would you buy a yoga mat from this man?
It is a truth universally acknowledged that the very best thing you could do for your writing is to tighten it up, just a little. Still with me? With apologies to Jane Austen, the first sentence he…

Hope the editing goes well, ma'am! Believe it or not, I became shaggier yet from that point, though I've lost a lot of hair weight now. Have a jolly weekend, T.

I've been doing a series of content-marketing posts for VentureBeat's upcoming summit, and that's been fun, but it's always more fun when I can throw Mark Twain into the mix.
Mark Twain may not have been an exemplary businessman, but he had an uncanny eye for what drives people and what separates the ordinary from the extraordinary. Today’s marketing leaders are extraordinary people, often melding traits like intelligence and toughness with “softer” skills like self-awareness and empathy. The most dynamic, influential leaders wed an analytic intelligence with emotional intelligence.

I spent some recent time in Myanmar, cruising with the Buddha. Let me tell you—that guy's golden.

Since I don't have children, I torture my characters.
Denying your fictional characters something—even if they are the sweetest of souls—is an effective way to see what they are made of. Holding back something they crave can show their real faces—or a…

I had some good (and sometimes weird) luck with writing contests, and in a roundabout way, one was a reason I'm going on a media trip to Myanmar this evening. To other writers:  Why not?
There’s a lot to be said for saying “no.” As hard as it can be to put up the stop sign, “no” can save you from taking on projects for which you are ill-suited, going to events that don’t enlarge yo…

It helps because you can say you left your computer on the plane, and then you can get your deadline extended. Well, there are some actual tips in there too.
There’s a plummy quote from Thoreau’s Walden that must open this discussion:

Good stuff from Mr. Fields on taking stock in a fluid situation, and perhaps finding room for growth rather than fleeing.

And anything that tastes like pumpkin pie is good.
There’s a lot of good to say about gratitude. Even though gratitude can seem like an industry these days (books! blogs! speeches!), and that making a gratitude list at Thanksgiving time can seem as…

Another piece of my Myanmar escapade. I need to write these in order to  tell myself I was really there.
Rivers and lakes are living systems, both above and below the waters. The lives and livelihoods of creatures above and creatures below are deeply intertwined in large lake/river systems, and such is the case with Inle Lake, the connected chain of waterways and water bodies—small and large—in Myanmar.

My secret is keeping my eyelashes perfectly combed.
If you're tired of being ignored, you may be missing one piece of the popularity puzzle. Here's how to stop blending in, and start standing out.

Some luscious visuals here.
“Airline Visual Identity, 1945-1975” showcases an extraordinary period of creativity in advertising and graphic design.

As long as we're Walter Mitty-fying, I want to go as Honey Ryder. (But even in my imagination, I know I'm Miss Moneypenny!)

Story
Tagline
Freeing words from the bondage of linear coddling. Or something like that.
Introduction
I love language, both its nuances and its broad strokes. I'm good at scrambling it, setting it up in tight lines, and tilting it toward windmills and other fanciful targets. I can also deliver it hard, fast and straight, if that's what it takes.

Check out The Write Word - http://www.tombentley.com - it's the writing and editing business I’ve run out of my house for more than 10 years. There you can see my writing and editing services and a sampling of the hundreds of  freelance pieces I've published—ranging from first-person essays to travel pieces to more journalistic subjects—in newspapers, magazines, and online.

My short story collection, Flowering and Other Stories, was published by AuthorMike Ink. It's available in print and as an ebook. Check out its info page here:

My novel, All Roads Are Circles, is available as an electronic download on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006L3G590
