Expectations: tricky devils. What is now surely might not be forever, but our minds sometimes make it out that way. Bad for us, but perhaps a useful tactic to take in story and character design.
You know that feeling while walking when you come to an unseen or unanticipated step or curb, and your foot, rather than landing on the expected solid ground going forward, instead free-falls downw...

If this guy polishes his drinks as much as he polishes that trailer, he'll make a mint. (Unfortunately, I interviewed him over the phone, so no samples, sigh.)
This trailer’s so shiny your drink’s ice might melt! Meet Greg Medow and his mobile “Bar Car”.

A little bit of whiskey alchemy? (Or sleight-of-barrel?). My Forbes piece on a startup selling engineered wooden "whiskey elements" to rapidly bring bottles of mediocre booze up to the high-priced hootch.
By Tom Bentley Innovation can crop up where and how you least expect it. In our series “An Unexpected Source of Innovation,” we take a look at some of America’s little-known sources of technological creativity! Most people aren’t interested in Rip van Winkling their stuff: in most instances, offering to age something [...]

An essay that reflects back on my first love, who disappeared a few years after high school, lost on a wild river in Colombia. First-prize winner in the 2014 Past Loves story contest.
We welcome you to this matrix of possibilities, all centered on relationships. Here you will find information about our two books, If Only I Could Tell You and Heartscapes, and our emphasis on the role of feelings about past loves in the journey toward spiritual and emotional growth.

Well, if you are going to get plastered, it's good to do it in an interesting place. The Sky Room is interesting and then some. My piece on some doings in my old hometown.
Take to the sky and the seas on a vintage-style weekend getaway to sunny Long Beach that includes an overnight aboard the oh-so-retro and very lux Queen Mary.

Man, I feel ashamed I still watch TV: here's Betty Reid Soskin, longtime blogger, civil-rights activist and at 93, the oldest full-time ranger in the national park service. Oh, she gives speeches too.

My American Scholar piece here is too short to do her justice, so I'm looking for a venue that accommodates a deeper interview. Betty's deep.

I suppose I should have put something in the headline for the no-gluten crowd ...
There are so many great things about being a freelance writer working out of the home. For instance, consider all of the unusual facial hair experiments you can conduct. (And to my women writer fri...

Adriana, you are the obvious choice to be the Empress of Exotic Catering that will provision all storytelling sessions. The stories will have more spice (and less gluten).

My year-end summary of how I dodge year-end summaries. And a dirty word: goals.
I’m not that big on end-of-year summation or highlight posts. When I read others, I’m reminded of how much I’ve forgotten over the year, or how much I missed. Or worse, who died, and how that makes...

I recently attended a performance of Zarkana, produced by Cirque du Soleil. No big deal: they merely re-wired my brain, short-circuited it, and gave it back to me as 1,000 AAA batteries.

Annie, I do love to praise people who make me anxious, so as you might imagine, I'm constantly complimenting people. And I'm sure your cats delight in you talking to them in Cirquish.

Story
Tagline
Freeing words from the bondage of linear coddling. Or something like that.
Introduction
I love language, both its nuances and its broad strokes. I'm good at scrambling it, setting it up in tight lines, and tilting it toward windmills and other fanciful targets. I can also deliver it hard, fast and straight, if that's what it takes.

Check out The Write Word - http://www.tombentley.com - it's the writing and editing business I’ve run out of my house for more than 10 years. There you can see my writing and editing services and a sampling of the hundreds of  freelance pieces I've published—ranging from first-person essays to travel pieces to more journalistic subjects—in newspapers, magazines, and online.

My short story collection, Flowering and Other Stories, was published by AuthorMike Ink. It's available in print and as an ebook. Check out its info page here:
