Reading text in challenging images
+Yaroslav Bulatov +Ian Goodfellow +Sacha Arnoud +Vinay Shet  and I just presented our work on reading short sequence of text from Street View images at the ICLR 2014 conference.

This blog post from the reCAPTCHA team shows the implication of this technology for the security of CAPTCHA systems since this new model can also be used to read CAPTCHAs at very high accuracy.

This shows that the act of typing in the answer to a distorted image should not be the only factor when it comes to determining a human versus a machine. [...] Last year, we announced that we’ve significantly reduced our dependence on text distortions as the main differentiator between human and machine, and instead perform advanced risk analysis.

You can get more details by following the link below.

Today we’re launching Google Camera, a new app for your Android phone or tablet that makes it easy to take quick photos and videos. And being behind the lens just got more fun with new creative picture modes.

Sleek Design. The 100% viewfinder gets out of your way while capturing the maximum resolution of the scene (no dropped pixels). And the extra large capture button is easy to press so your eyes never lose sight of the subject.

Lens Blur. Emphasize the subject while blurring the background for an SLR-like shot with shallow depth-of-field (or bokeh). You can even change the subject in focus after taking the shot.

Improved Panorama. New higher resolution panoramas capture the full width and detail of a scene.

Photo Sphere. Immersive 360 degree photo spheres let you look up, down and all around...now at up to 50 megapixels! For the first time available on non-Nexus devices.

Google Camera is now available on the Play store (http://goo.gl/llsZjx), and works on all phones and tablets running Android 4.4+ KitKat. We’re just getting started, and in the months ahead we'll make Google Camera available to more devices, helping make photography easier, faster and more fun.

Check out our Research Blog to learn more (http://goo.gl/lUDfi8).

Today’s the day to become a Glass Explorer

We let the cat out of the bag, you marked your calendars, and the time has finally arrived. If you're a US resident who is 18+, you can purchase Glass and join the Explorer Program at glass.google.com/getglass

The Explorer bundle costs $1500+tax and includes your favorite shade or frame, a charger, pouch, hard case and mono earbud. As an Explorer, your feedback will help to shape how Glass evolves over time.

We’ve got a limited number of spots available, so don’t wait too long – we can't wait to meet you and hear about your first adventures with Glass.

Glass is the loom of the 21st century Luddite.

I think it's ridiculous that this journalist gets assaulted and his $1,500 property stolen and destroyed and then -- too PC for me -- works hard to "understand."

This is going too far, San Francisco.

Become a Glass Explorer on Tues April 15

Whoops. So... we’d planned to post this next week, but it looks like the cat's out of the bag now. Over the past several months, we’ve been trying out different ways to expand the Explorer program. Some of you signed up at Google I/O, some told us what you would do #ifihadglass , some were referred by a friend, some joined through their school or university. Our Explorers are moms, bakers, surgeons, rockers, and each new Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better. But every day we get requests from those of you who haven’t found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too. So in typical Explorer Program fashion, we’re trying something new.

Next Tuesday, April 15th at 6am PDT, we’re opening up some spots in the Glass Explorer Program. Any adult in the US* can become an Explorer by visiting our site and purchasing Glass for $1500 + tax – and it now comes with your favorite shade or frame, thanks to feedback from our current Explorers. The number of spots available is limited, so mark your calendar if you want to get in. You can find us on Tuesday at: http://google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one

We’re excited to meet our new Explorers, and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts about Glass.

*To everyone outside the US... we know. Sorry :( We’re just not ready yet to bring Glass to other countries.
