Don't use Shop With Points when you make purchases on Amazon.com. This may be well-known already, and it doesn't make a large difference, but the principle may be important to you (as it is to me): if you are part of a rewards program with Amazon, for example if you have an Amazon Visa card, then you actually lose money by using their Shop With Points feature during checkout. After a long conversation with customer service representatives at both Amazon and Chase (the company that administers Amazon Visa), I've confirmed that when you apply program points to your purchase, and thereby lower the purchase price, you only earn points back on the reduced purchase price, not on the pre-discount price. Since Chase allows you to redeem points as cash or Amazon gift card, this means that you earn more by not using Shop With Points and instead always redeeming your program points as cash or card. So, avoid using Shop With Points to earn the maximum on your purchases!

First and last paragraphs of today's NYT editorial:

On Monday, John Cornyn, the senior Republican senator from Texas, warned President Obama that if he dares to name a successor to Justice Antonin Scalia of the Supreme Court, the nominee “will bear some resemblance to a piñata.”

[...]

Mr. Cornyn’s repellent remarks were, in this sense, an accurate reflection of the Republican mind-set. Piñatas are, after all, attacked by blindfolded children. The children don’t care how much damage they inflict as long as they get the prize in the end.

It doesn't take much observation to realize that our current economic and political systems are broken and in need of repair. The NSP is a new, coordinated and broad-based effort that is attacking the Next System question head on, and it deserves our support.

A long essay criticizing OOP that makes a number of good points. Unfortunately, it takes too long to get there and muddles a few things along the way. I'm sure that the argument against OOP can be made a lot more concisely, and more definitively, than this. Has that argument been published anywhere?

What kind of person names a programming language after himself? Oh, right, I should have guessed.
