Say hello to Pippin, our October Dog of the Month! Pippin is a 5 year old Labradoodle who bears a striking resemblance to a certain Sesame Street character. Hence, his nickname “Big Bird”! He is a very exuberant boy who practically pulls his mom to the ground bursting through the front door! Pippin loves to lie down completely in the pool, making his already skinny legs look like doggy toothpicks. We join proud momma, Penny, in congratulating this fun-loving pup as our October Dog of the Month!

Toby’s Doggy Tips #3

THREE AVOIDABLE PROBLEMS THAT CAN HELP YOUR DOG LEAD A HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER LIFE:
1. DENTAL DISEASE – there are very few dog owners who don’t dread the idea of keeping their dogs’ teeth clean and well-maintained. Some lucky dogs can go through their whole lives without developing a problem with tartar buildup. But most dogs will develop this problem which can lead to periodontal disease. And this lead to kidney, liver and heart problems. In addition, without regular inspection and cleaning, a cracked or broken tooth can be overlooked. This means your dog is in daily pain and can effect his eating and can lead to behavioral issues. (just think how you feel walking around with a toothache!). It’s so very important that you make the effort to clean your pup’s teeth – there are many products and methods on the market. If you look in your dog’s mouth and her teeth are crusted with plaque, it’s time to schedule a teeth cleaning with your Vet!
2. OBESITY – The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) estimates that 50% of dogs in this country are overweight or obese! And the primary cause is owner non-recognition. Over the years I have tried to gently suggest to our doggy daycare dog owners that their pup could stand to lose some weight. Mostly, I have seen surprised reactions and sometimes even indignation! When you stand over your dog, looking down you should see a clearly discernible waist. When you run your hand along her ribcage area you should be able to feel their ribs. If not, your dog is probably overweight. Obesity in dogs can cause a variety of problems including osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, heart and respiratory disease, cruciate ligament injuries, kidney disease, many forms of cancer and a decreased life expectancy. Our dogs’ lives are short enough already! Have an honest discussion with your Vet. Develop a sensible nutrition and exercise plan. If your dog is already fat, slowly increase the lengths of the walks you take her on. And hey, you just might lose some weight too!!
3. OVER-LONG NAILS – While maybe not as serious as the first two problems, over-long nails can decrease your dog’s quality of life by making his every step uncomfortable. Extra long nails are easy to spot, but dogs who have longer hair hiding painfully long nails – and perhaps even lesions on their toes from where long, curving nails have created pressure sores on adjacent toes. If you can hear his nails go “tick, tick, tick” as he walks on tile or wood floors, then his nails are too long. If you are easily able to cut your dog’s nails, trim a tiny bit off each nail weekly. If you are uneasy or if your dog struggles, you should find a Groomer (like Veronica here at Toby’s) and schedule frequent trimmings. Your dog will thank you!!

Toby’s Doggy tips #2

This month’s topic is on the serious side, but having just gone through a scare with my Toby, indeed he had four tumors removed last week, we offer:

10 Possible Signs of Canine Cancer

* Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow

* Sores that don’t heal

* Weight loss

* Loss of appetite

* Bleeding or discharge from any body opening

* Offensive odor

* Difficulty eating or swallowing

* Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina

* Persistent lameness or stiffness

* Difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating

Rest assured that it does not mean that your dog has cancer if she exhibits any of these signs. They are not specific to cancer and could also indicate other illnesses, many of which are not life-threatening. For instance, difficulty eating may simply be the sign of painful tooth decay. But if a problem lasts a week or two and

shows no sign of abating, a doctor’s visit is warranted. Better to go through the trouble of getting your dog to her vet for an exam than to wait and risk getting a cancer diagnosis when it’s too late to treat effectively.

We love our dogs like they are our children! The sad reality is that they will leave us far too quickly. Pay attention. Touch and feel your dog. Be aware of any changes in behavior. Any unusual bumps should be monitored closely. My Toby is apparently a dog who is prone to fatty masses, so I am always running my hands over his body. Fortunately, the masses removed last week were non-cancerous. But, I am certainly more acutely aware of the gift of every minute that I have with him (and Baby and Buddy too!!). I hope you will all give your pups an extra hug today!!

Say hello to Walter, our February Dog of the Month! Walter is a 3 ½ year old French Bulldog and has been coming to Toby’s for almost a year now. Walter is a spunky little fireplug of a pup. He will race around Kamp, but if he spies an available human lap he’s up in a flash! He will playfully gnaw on fingers and is plenty liberal with his slobbery kisses. When he tires out, Walter will perch himself on the bridge and survey the action. Such a sweet boy for the sweet month of February! We join proud Papa Rich in congratulating Walter as our February Dog of the Month!!

Toby's Doggy Tips #1

Today we are introducing a new monthly feature that will aim to offer dog owners information that hopefully will be useful – from food choices to health issues and ways to have fun with your pups!!
So, without further ado,
Five Great Things To Do For Your Dog This Year!
• Schedule a Wellness exam at your Vet for your dog! A complete annual exam can ensure your pup’s health is good and can catch any potential problems early.
• Make a commitment to brush your dog’s teeth! Whether you use a tooth brush, finger brush, or just your finger, brushing regularly can avoid painful dental problems and costly cleanings.
• Read your dog’s food labels! Make sure the first ingredient is real meat, such as chicken, beef, lamb or salmon. Avoid foods that list by-products. Quality food makes a real difference!!
• Change your daily walk routine! Don’t let monotony set in. Walking on different streets or paths gives your dog a variety of scents and sounds and can enrich your dog mentally.
• Last, but not least – Socialize your dog!! If you get a puppy or adopt a new dog, it is important to socialize you pups to other dogs of all shapes and sizes. Dogs that don’t get socialized can become fearful and even aggressive around other dogs. Toby’s K-9 Kamp is in our tenth year of providing a safe and fun-filled environment for your dog to romp with other playful dogs. Your dog will be expertly monitored by our highly trained Staff. Your dog will learn a lot from the other dogs and the bonus is that at the end of the day you will have a very tired dog!!
